Hey everybody!

How's it all going? Tell us all about it!!! ๐Ÿ˜Š

I have been trying to fit in my runs around desk stuff and our newly available windsurfing (on Wednesday we had our first time out on the sea this year!!!), so sometimes I feel a bit rushed on my runs. We also had a lot of heat, and people on the beaches, during the week - which was tiring and a little bit stressful (although please don't believe everything you might read in the Brighton Argus ๐Ÿ˜„). This all made it even trickier to fit in my runs, but I still managed to squeeze in three ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

And it was really nice to take the time after completing my windy intervals run on Saturday to pause and frame this peaceful scene on the beach, which Google kindly 'stylised' for me to make it look quite dreamlike! Who else likes to take a little time to chill out and smell the roses after a run? I am definitely going to aim to do more of it!

If you're new here, or just taking a look and getting comfortable before posting, hello! This post is a great place to introduce yourself if you're ready to do so.

If you are interested, there are plenty of workouts you can do at home from the YouTube library over on Strength & Flex, why not take a look!

Thank you for your work here roseabi and all the admin folks. I'm using this forum much more now and liking the way it works.

I had a good last week and finished with a HM yesterday running over all the bridges in Norwich (as Humber Bridge HM was cancelled you see) It was VERY windy but quite refreshing down by the river Wensum, and I just went backwards and forwards exploring places and memories of when I lived and went to art school there. Took a couple of snack stops and finished in 3:20, my original target of 3 hours went out the window.....no worries.

I'm still having trouble with trainers, my new bouncy Nike downshifters aren't wide enough across the toes and on a long run my feet spread. I keep messing about with the lacing and insoles but maybe I need new new trainers........thinking Brooks.....but not sure about spending that much.

This week I've got a beach run to do for my club's virtual handicap. Hmmmmm, when is the tide out +cool conditions+not too windy?! Happy running everyone!

Well done on your HM Nevvy! I really enjoy the exploratory runs over the known courses too. Hope you manage to find the trainers that work best for you. Iโ€™ve switched trainers recently as I work out which shoes feel the best for my knees after some knee issues. The beach run sounds lovely!

in reply to Decker

Which ones have you chosen Decker and are they helping thus far?

Decker profile image
DeckerUltramarathon in reply to

Well I was originally running on Saucony Kinvaras and Breakthrus, but as they built up too many miles, I had switched to Hoka Cliftons. After many months of use I had a knee problem due I think to pushing too hard on hill repeats and then doing a long 40k run a few days later. Then after rest weeks and returning from the knee issues, the Hokas still gave me pain, but none of my Saucs did. So now I am running on a pair of Sauc Guide 10s for awhile before I test the Hokas again. Not sure if they played any part in the problem, but right now they donโ€™t work for me. They were brilliant for my last HM and I got a considerable PR in them, so I am willing to give them another try.

in reply to Decker

Really interesting. The Run Testers on YouTube do good guides to running shoes. I like the look of Saucony or On cloudflow as my next pair. Good luck and I hope your knees settle down.

Decker profile image
DeckerUltramarathon in reply to

Itโ€™s so personal, the shoes that work best for you. The Saucs have been my primary brand since I began running. I tried the Hokas for a change and comfort. Still think they can offer something. OnCloud are popular with some runners in our group too. Best of luck with your choices!

I got a pair from Santa but theyโ€™re a half size too small. Ok for knocking about in though. Theyโ€™re rather lovely ๐Ÿฅฐ

I went to a couple of local beaches (Worthing and Lancing) on my week off, and not many people at all. Would love to be that little bit closer to them, but about half an hour drive so not too bad.

A friend of mine is doing something called the calendar club challenge. Itโ€™s starts on the 1st day of the month with a 1 mile run, upping the miles by 1 every day, which ends with a 30 mile run. Unbelievably he just has two runs remaining now. What a machine!

Anyway, that inspired me to try my own challenge. My runs have dropped off badly over the year and I needed something. So, Iโ€™m attempting 100 miles in 30 days and started a few days ago now.

Hope everyone is well and staying safe. Enjoy your runs this week.

Not been posting for a while, but I have been lurking in the shadows. I got very grumpy during lockdown as couldnโ€™t run and give the pups the exercise they needed, so my running was restricted to my back garden ๐Ÿ˜ฑ and on one memorable wet day when the lawn was too slippy, in my house, 12 paces is the distance from my front and back doors, the longest straight line in the house, I did 3.5k that day then expired through sheer boredom ๐Ÿ˜…

Great news is for the third time of trying I have one medium, one long run, then around 10 days of tapering before, at last, my first attempt at HM distance.

As I can chose which day to actually run it am going to see what the weather forecast is like in a fortnight or so, but thinking it would be pretty cool to be able to say I ran my first HM on my 70th birthday, but would rather run it on a cooler day so we will see.

Other great news is I have raised nearly ยฃ400 for Independent Setter Rescue and Rehome, and am really hopeful we can get to our ยฃ500 target which would be fantastic.

So please keep your fingers and paws xd for team โ€œ10 Paws Half Marathonโ€

RUN is on my to do list today. But the weather! Oh my gosh. I got woken up at about four o clock this morning with the shutters bashing around and rain pouring in where I'd left the windows ajar because it has been so close at night lately. So maybe RUN will have to move to tomorrow ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

I am sitting on the sofa in my running gear absolutely raging because Strava route planner is now subscription only?! Was going to quickly plot a nice little 5k round the new town streets for my evening run (thus avoiding the hoardes of kids that keep gathering on the meadows) but it says I can't! Oo Strava you rotters! ๐Ÿ˜ก

Well I had my second long run on Saturday - 15k trails and everything felt good. Fingers crossed I can move into 20 territory later this week. Just balancing between needing to get out there and not over doing it. Businesses are starting to re open again and I finally got a real haircut AND the patios opened up so Mrs D and I had a drink in the sun for the first time in months! Happy running everyone!

roseabi profile image

Well done for the run, and for looking spiffing on the patio! xxx

I've had a really solid month finally shaking off some knee injuries of late. I've managed 72.5 miles this month with one more run tomorrow. I've bought a basic Garmin (45s) my first, as a treat to record my runs to save me taking my phone along with me all the time. I enjoy running different routes but do like my usual lap around the Humber Bank as in my head I split the distance in 4 stages. Once around is 4.5 m so twice 9 and three times gives me HM distance.

I'm still nursing an annoying niggle at the base of my right buttock after being bowled over by a dog over a month ago. Sitting still for any time makes it worse so I am carrying on with running regardless, but have avoided steep hills.

I need some structure to my solo running so have signed up for the Women's Running 100k in 30 days challenge, starting on Wednesday 01 July to make it easy to keep track of the days, if not the distance, as I work in miles. I hope that as I submit evidence they will keep track of my "running" (get it?) total for me.

Still hopeful that the HM I had in mind at the end of September might go ahead in real life...

Hi roseabi and everyone, as some of you might have seen, I completed a Run Streak of 100 days last Thursday with a half marathon๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ The weather wasnโ€™t on my side but I started out early and finished about 8:30๐Ÿฅต๐Ÿ”ฅ

I was lucky to find some shade from 10k to 15k before running along the seafront, then again for the last 2k๐Ÿ‘ I used my hydration vest and got through almost 2.5 litres of water!๐Ÿ’ฆ

I had a couple of days off running but Iโ€™ve restarted now.

For the time being I havenโ€™t got any plans, just to stay injury-free๐Ÿ˜Š

I think Iโ€™ll have a go at a virtual organised event so I can get a bit more bling!๐Ÿ…

Well done on the HM!!! I don't get on with the bladder in a hydration vest, but i find it useful to carry a couple of bottles and fill up a soft flask from them. I ran a HM in the city on Sunday and nipped into a shop for some sugary isotonic juice too, that was a novelty after all countryside runs recently.

David_G profile image

Thanks Nevvy, and congratulations on your HM too! I donโ€™t like carrying anything around with me. I find it upsets my rhythm, such as it is! I only drink water too while Iโ€™m running. I donโ€™t really like the taste of anything else!

Love the photo. Iโ€™m missing the sea a lot just now.

Donโ€™t think there was anything of interest in my week ๐Ÿค”. My Ride the Night event, which had been postponed to Halloween, has now been cancelled and my entry automatically rolls round to May next year - I wasnโ€™t too keen on end October so I guess itโ€™s not entirely bad news!

Iโ€™ve made a start on my HM plan and riding has been relegated to cross training status ๐Ÿ˜€. Loving the rain and cooler weather for running, if not for riding.

Just found out the Loch Ness Marathon has been cancelled. It has done a great job at keeping me motivated during lockdown and I really appreciate that they've made this decision nice and early (as I was about to up my long run to 17 miles this week).

While I did think this was coming, I really didn't think I would be this disappointed about it. I know this is purely selfish and they've made the right decision, but I think I've posted on here before, my motivation to run leaves me a bit when I have nothing to aim for. I just feel like deleting my training spreadsheet (deleting a spreadsheet is a big deal!).

I don't have any plans to keep going with the training plan without a marathon to aim for and absolutely no plan to run a marathon distance on my own as I know some others have. So I guess I have a new challenge - how to run without a plan?

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to R4inbow

Sorry to hear about Loch Ness xxx

Running without a plan, sounds like a post I must write soon!

R4inbow profile image
R4inbowUltramarathon in reply to roseabi

I'd love to see that post! As it is, I was talking to some friends last night and they've pointed me in the right direction. New plan is to try for a 10k PB at the end of August.

Without a plan just seem far to hard for me to consider right now, especially without my running club or parkrun.

Langley-Loper profile image
Langley-LoperHalf Marathon in reply to R4inbow

I know what you mean. I love following a plan. My running is a bit aimless at the moment but I've signed up to 100k in 30 days so I have to go out and do SOMETHING.

Then I might redo my old HM plan just for the hell of it.

Don't blame you for not wanting to do a solo marathon, that would be tough, and lonely!

R4inbow profile image
R4inbowUltramarathon in reply to Langley-Loper

Good luck with your 100k in 30 days. I did a similar thing in May with Miles for Mind, it really helped having something to aim for. Especially as I find getting out of the door is always the hardest part of a run!

Are your shoes too small? That's a common reason for sore toenails.

No their 6.5 Brookeโ€™s and Iโ€™m normally size 6. I think maybe socks were the culprit.๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€

What a gorgeous photo! Look at that sky ๐Ÿ˜Ž You wouldnโ€™t think it was in the UK ๐Ÿ™‚

Iโ€™ve had a good week, the running and other exercise going well. This week Iโ€™ll start a different routine of aiming for a 10 miler every three weeks instead of once a month. I ultimately want to do it once a week but Iโ€™m changing slowly.

I havenโ€™t done much gardening at all - far too hot, then rain and wind - so trying to find jobs to do inside which is hard for me. I really, really donโ€™t want to clear those cupboards ๐Ÿ™€

What I have done though is lots of online shopping - new shoes, armband, earplugs. BUT, I havenโ€™t succumbed to the Sweaty Betty sale this year! Must be a first for me ๐Ÿ˜•

Lots of new faces on here after my long(ish) break! And hello again to the old crew.

My running and fitness mojo was lost for a long while (and Covid + teleworking + new job + etc. rather compounded difficulties), but I seem to have found the damned thing down the back of the sofa! Iโ€™ve sIgned-up for a HM in October and also to Strava Premium immediately so as to part with some cash so I donโ€™t relapse on pain of the financial hit! :-)

Went out for a cheeky 3km jog today and things still seem to work ok(ish), but Iโ€™ve got a bit of work to do to get back into decent shape. My legs have certainly enjoyed the break to be sure.

Just 2-3 joggy 5k runs per week planned for starters, then we will see...
