If you ask my husband or daughter - or maybe my father once he reads the email - they will emphatically say 'NO'!!! But, despite everything, I beg to differ.
It's hot today. Inspired by the lovely Frenc and sparky66 I decided the only way to safely fit a run in was to get out uncharacteristically early. I was out the door at 6:15am and headed to the woods - also uncharacteristically - for shade.
I wear glasses all the time and had chosen sunglasses as low sun gives me migraines, but it was a bit of a struggle in the shade o the trees. It wasn't long before I tripped over something but luckily managed to recover myself with grace (I imagined an audience of oohs and aahs followed by gentle cheers 😍).
I continued on, really enjoying the change of scenery, constantly aware of the trip hazards thinking it was a great way of slowing me down on my long run - this was the first run of my new Metric Marathon plan and I was having a good one!
Until I tripped again! Recovery was NOT an option this time. This fall was fast and hard!!! First I was aware something bad had happened to my teeth. Then a really, really uncomfortable pain that was making breathing hard work. I did make involuntary noises at that point 🙈😂. That pain slowly subsided and was replaced by nasty wrist pain - oh no, a cast? what would that do for my training plan? surely not!
Amazingly Garmin incident detection didn't go off (I only have to brake hard on my bike and Garmin is instantly letting everyone know), so I called hubbie (no answer) then daughter (no answer). So what to do? It only took a few seconds to decide that running on was the best option. Needed a drink first - ever tried pulling up the stopper of a bottle with no front teeth 🤷♀️. I was 5.5k into a run which was to be between 12 and 13.1k. No point going home without hitting the target distance if I could make it. I figured keeping up adrenalin levels was a good way to manage any pain (please do not follow this example, I suspect no medic has ever issued such advice!).
On I went. I had no real idea quite where I was, but that was OK because I still had a ways to go. Both hubbie and daughter returned my calls. Both told me I was mad for running on. I took a short break to chat when I met someone I hadn't seen for ages. I think she thought I was in shock, told me I was likely to feel 'most unwell' later 🙉
Just shy of 8k later I got home. I haven't totally lost my front teeth and they do not really hurt right now (dentist appt on Monday).
I convinced myself my wrist is not broken (though my finger may be?) however typing is sore and it has now turned very, very blue. My guess is heavy bruising (please let that be right).
My ribs ache but are not bad and breathing is fine, so they are likely just bruised too (looking at the dirt on my top they probably hit the ground).
The arm and knee grazes are inconsequential.
Best of all my feet and legs work just fine AND 13.2k with no blisters on my feet - well there had to be a happy ending to this story right? 🥰
I know running is good for me, I absolutely know it. That I ran on is in part testament to that. That my only concern over injuries is how they affect my next run is further testament to that. That I can't wait to get out and run, yet further testament. I can't quite see the funny side just yet, but I am still smiling (albeit a rather odd smile!) and it was a good run!!!
So, take care out there folks; and if your next run feels a little boring ... maybe take a moment to recognise that as a good thing!!!

It all happened way too fast for fear tbh! But things went downhill this afternoon after typing this post. My wrist became super painful, horribly blue and I started to faint (at the haridresser's!!!!)!!! Long story short, after several hours in minor injuries, wrist is not broken but is now splinted. I'm shattered, but firmly believe tomorrow will be OK. And no-one said I couldn't run (I didnt ask!). Having said that, tomorrow's 60k ride is definitely cancelled - some common sense will prevail!!!
Oh Linda I feel dreadful for you 😟. What an awful thing to happen, and I feel partly responsible too. So sorry about your fall, and I hope your dentist can sort your teeth out - most of one of my front teeth is rebuilt after falling up some steps after too much wine once, but that’s another story. It’s amazing what they can do now. That’s amazing you did your full run, major kudos to you. I hope your next run is really, really boring. 😊.
Definitely don't feel responsible Frenc!!! far from it. Me and my sunglasses are the only things to blame here! I am so encouraged by your comments about rebuilding teeth. I can't wait to speak to the dentist on Monday! Boring? yep, I'm all for boring right now 😂
OMG Linda!!! That’s just awful 😱 I winced when I read the bit about you falling 🫢
Your poor teeth, but luckily at least you didn’t swallow the bits!
I can’t believe you ran on after that and for such a long run too but I do understand. Definitely a memorable run and I really hope your next one is completely uneventful 🙂
PS I think you deserve an extra glass of something tonight 🥂
I did look for the teeth among the chalk and flint - not sure why!!! I had more than an extra drink. I am hopeful of sleep tonight. It took a while for the shock to hit home and now I just want to get on with tomorrow!!!
Thanks ... but maybe ask tomorrow! All the adrenaline is gone, just cold reality and frustration/fear (when can I run/ride again?) left today. I need to get moving and get on out for a walk!!!💪🦸♀️😊
Oh no!!! I winced and shuddered as I read this post (reliving my last painful fall!). I am so sorry to hear about your teeth and other injuries - poor you 😩. I am amazed that you managed to continue your run Linda, very brave. When I fall I tend to go into shock for a while and feel sick/queasy, so I have to sit down. I do hope your dentist can do a good repair job. Take care 😊
I was in shock I guess until I could successfully stand again. At that point running seemed the fastest/best way home ... and of course there was the plan ... 🤣 I thinkthe shock finally kicked in later. I'm looking forward to a normal day tomorrow!!!
As well as hoping the dentist can fix your teeth without too much pain for your mouth or your bank balance, i'm going to be really boring and suggest you get your wrist checked out asap. I'm hoping there's a walk-in centre near you so you don't have to do the full A&E works.
Thank you. I spent all afternoon at the hospital after the wrist got nasty and I fainted a couple of times 🙈 Verdict is not broken - big yay! Splint will help til the bruising etc goes . As for teeth- I just hope the dentist has good, cheap news on Monday 🤞
Ouch! Linda, that's awful, I hope you're dosed up with plenty of pain relief now and your wrist and finger are bruised only and not broken As a fellow spectacle wearer, I totally sympathise too. Your dentist will have them repaired in no time and I can speak from experience, my front tooth was lost not in a fall, but on a very hard boiled sweet! 😅 You'd never know now, smile restored. Heal well.
I'm really loving all these examples of rebuilt teeth 🤞 Hospital thinks there is only bruising which is great news. A combination of pain reliefand alcohol will hopefully encourage a good healing sleep!
Oh no Linda. You are the 3rd fall I know of on here this month after UpTheStanley and TailChaser both fell at different parkruns on the same day. Tree roots or stones can certainly send you flying. I hope are not in too much pain.
Do get that hand checked out though, just in case you’ve done something more than bruising .
I’m glad you managed to get a dental appointment and do hope you get replacements soon. Your photo reminded me of when I tried to walk through my french windows once, and I sported a similar look.
ps have you tried daily disposable contact lenses?
It's too easy to trip - hope UTS is OK. After typing this post my wrist turned blue, seized, swelled and hurt a lot! I then started fainting in the middle of a haircut (yet tobe finished)🙈 Remainder of the afternoon getting an xray. They dont think It's broken - yay - and have just given me a splint. It definitely isn't up for my planned ride today though ☹️
Thankfully UTS had only a cut finger, a torn T-shirt and bruised ribs, but during those few moments between tripping and landing you just know anything could happen . Glad the wrist is not broken.
Well, all I can say is that I am impressed beyond measure. You are one tough cookie Linda and I am totally with your “don’t give it an inch “ approach to injuries. That isn’t the same as being foolhardy.,.,.you were just being ultra determined 😁
Although I feel rather defeated this morning. There's no way this wrist can do a 60k ride today, the very idea has me wincing. I just need to focus on the fact I'm gloriously uninjured from the waist down 😀
It's possible that the dentist may be able to do an "etch" filling on the front teeth with white filling. They last about 5-10 years if done well. I have one from a childhood accident which has to be replaced every now and then. Expect to pay about £70-ish (not sure if that will be per tooth).
When I fell on my face it took ten months for some teeth to reattach where they’d been knocked about. They’re crooked but at least they’re safe 🙂. I couldn’t eat for weeks but I lost some weight 😀
I couldn't find my teeth in the dirt ... I did look 😀. The wrist is now really painful - can't ride and may well be a problem for work - gardener - on Monday. Need to kick myself this morning and go for a long walk by some soothing water I think. Painkillers first tho 🤣
Yesterday I was proper out of sorts. I ate very badly - pizza!- but just slept 11 hours straight!!! The scales are about to tell me off, but once that's over I am hopeful of a much better day 🥰
Well, I was going to say yes, but goodness. Having just read this, seemingly not in this case.
I am so, so glad that it is not as dire as it could have been, although dire enough! Also, that you have been checked out and receiving treatment. What a horribly frightening thing and ouch! Those teeth, oh dear! My daughter has those two teeth that have been built back after an incident with a rock hard lime in a swimming pool in France...she was a teenager and they are fine and still strong now.Your dentist will get you sorted and your smile is still lovely!
Poor you... you must feel battered and bruised!
Do take care and do take it gently. We do not bounce in the same way that we did when we were children...
HUGE well done on finishing the run... gosh what stern stuff you are made of x
oooh, another tooth rebuild example - I am very heartened to read that this is such a thing. I have no bounce or stern stuff left today - it's all got a bit real and very frustrating!!! but tomorrow is another day ... and today I can still walk 🥰
Ouch!! 😫 I hope your teeth will be okay. Just the thought gives me nightmares. You are so resilient to have carried on running for such a long distance after your fall. Wishing you a speedy recovery. ❤️🩹
What an absolutely brilliant post. I loved reading this 🙏 Very best wishes for your recovery and I really got a sense of some of your strongest assets...your positive attitude and empowering mind 🙌🙏
Only just seen this after your Strava post and hadn’t realised just how much damage you’d done to yourself 🤕 It’s amazing what dentists can do, so good luck for Monday and hope the bruising and swelling starts to ease soon xx
Ay-ay-ay… What a fall that was. I read your post with my hand held firmly over my mouth. I do hope you’re surviving the painful wait for the dentist and that your wrist is ok. So much can happen in the short second of a trip - we look back once the emergency phase wears off and reprimand ourselves (‘if only, I’d not…’); - but we probably shouldn’t think too much about it, else we’d never move. I’ve tripped badly while running but also while ambling through an art gallery; the damage was identical. It’s just really rotten luck. Get well soon.
Ooh, I better stay away from art galleries ... Really rotten luck is about right! but it could have been worse (not that I want to dwell on that either). I will be back out running on Monday but will stick to open, well lit tarmac! I fear it will be longer before I can take this wrist for a ride, but I'm going to hope it heals fast 🤞
However the thought of this wrist + all my weight on the handlebars + the state of repair of Bucks roads = 😱😱😱 Seems I'm a less determined rider, despite it being just 4 weeks to Peterboro 100 🙈
I did something stupid in an art gallery. Fortunately I was only embarrassed rather than injured. I hung my coat on an exhibit in the cafe. Well It looked like a coat stand to me ☺️🤷♀️
Oh no Linda, sounds like you’ve had a really big bash there. When I saw your photo on Strava I didn’t realise you’d had an accident. I hope you wrist and finger are feeling on the mend now and that you are able to get your teeth sorted.
We all know that running is good for you, really. This is just superficial really and that deep down, underneath you are a fit super-duper-woman who will come back from this and get that metric marathon 💪
In the meantime, take care and (in the words of that programme from years back) ‘be careful out there!’ Xxx
Ugghhh,' be careful out there' has taken on a whole new meaning!!! I agree, running is definitely good for us. I still have my eyes set on the Peterboro 100 ride in July if I can ... tho probably only 50% hopeful now given the wrist. I'll skip this weekend's long ride and take a week off before deciding. Chester MM isn't til Oct, and so long as the wrist ain't broke I hope to move to run 2 on my plan on schedule 🤣 - this plan didn't even get to start well 🙄🤣
You’re getting it all out of the way now so the rest of it will be plain sailing 👍 (that’s what I told myself after my 3 things the other week! 😂). Once your wrist has calmed down it will be time to meet the demons that caused this head on and show they haven’t won. Knowing you I bet you have enough training in the tank for Peterboro already anyway?🤞Onwards and upwards 💪💪💪
O my goodness, I hope you are feeling a little better tonight and recovered from the shock. This unfortunate incident has just strengthened your resolve and determination (not that you need it). Please do take care while you are healing. By the way, a friend has a similar teeth story with a very happy ending. Xx
Just loving these teeth stories - they are getting me through the weekend. Yesterday was weird. I had no energy, felt deflated. Normally I would exercise through that, but when I went for a good walk I turned after just 1k out!!! However, I just slept from 9pm to 8am!!! Am imagining some of my resolve and determination will be back today 🤞
Thank you. I just slept about 11 hours straight!!!I'm going to ask my dentist what proportion of children do this! It's so good to hear there should be a good outcome. I can't wait to speak to her and see what's possible.
Hi Linda. Just catching up on posts and nearly fell off my chair when I read this one. What a nightmare that must have been for you. So sorry that you went through this. It’s a reminder for all of us that running is actually quite a dangerous business. Hope you have recovered a bit now and are feeling OK about it all.
Oh boy, Linda you certainly look battle scarred. I’m glad you’re well overall after all. The dentists of today are like wizards and the wrist will heal. It happens even to the best, let’s hope it doesn’t happen again. 👍
Jeez, I hope not! It may be a while before I run in woods again though. Perhaps you should add a 'sunglasses as you move from sun to shade' warning to your hot weather blog. Of course I may have tripped anyway, but annoyingly I know it might just have made the difference if I'd had my ordinary glasses on. I maybe enquiring about reactive lenses next time I'm at the optician ...
I’ve been running ‘off road’ recently, having discovered new paths in some parks but with my lenses on and face covered with dark shades, I’ve been very cautious of the tree roots and general state of zig zag paths and lower visibility. It’s not the same as even and bright roads that I normally pummel. As an injury veteran myself (both knees, one ankle, left wrist and a front tooth), I am super aware of the possible traps on the road. Then again, as I carefully observed where I was stepping I ran into a low hanging branch which nearly knocked off my shades. I cannot win….
Ouch, ouch, ouch! 😫First visit here in a while and so sorry to read this Linda - no wonder your body had a wobble at the hairdressers! Good news that your wrist is not broken and as others have said, dentists can do amazing things! You are right of course, that running is (usually😉) good for us but my goodness me, we can be a stubborn and slightly bonkers lot too!
Oh Linda, just read your post. What a horrible shock to your system. 1 minute running along happily and the next, face down on the ground.... Hard to believe you carried on running, it says alot about your determination. It's good to be reminded of going from bright sun to shade at this time of year in sunglasses. I run in woods and will be more observant as a result of your fall. Gardening might be difficult one handed tho. I'd suggest taking it easy for a few days but you are the expert on your body and I'm sure you'll be listening to it?! Good luck at the dentist today. Keep us posted.
Ouch! I hope you are feeling a bit more yourself now since it's a few days later, but no wonder you were feeling fragile the next day! A friend of mine came a cropper while running alongside me - she hadn't spotted a pothole which was totally hidden in a deep shadow across the lane on a very sunny day. Landed on her chin, nasty grazes but no bad injuries. She also continued the run, and only felt wobbly later. Amazing what our bodies can do!
Hello Linda, Not the sort of run anyone wants. Ow! Oh! Aw! I am so sorry. From your last reply to grumpyoldgirl it sounds like a new teeth plan is in place which sounds good. Get well soon and here are some get well flowers 🌹🌸🌺🌼🌻🌷💐
I got an emergencybappt.on the Monday with my preferred.dentist in the practice. And she literally dit it all there and then! Turns out she is leaving in a week. I was so lucky. And SO grateful. I am pretty sure I made her Monday!!! She was lucky to get away without a full on hug 🤣
