First South Downs Run 😊

I apologise, the title is fairly misleading! I certainly haven’t just run the SD, rather I dipped my toe in the water! Even though the SD is literally on my doorstep, today is the first time I’ve plucked up the courage to run a tiny bit of it. I felt very brave and somewhat ambitious but told myself it’s just a bit of fun, and what’s the worst that can happen! Anyway, first off, over the M3 motorway bridge and into a large field, lots of chalky stones underfoot, but lovely views. Then through the tiny but pretty village of Chilcomb, and up a stonking hill, where I had to rest at the top clinging onto a fence. This is the SD proper now, so on I went, following footpaths and hedgerows. I didn’t venture too far in, as things to do today, but I feel as though I’ve had an adventure all the same! Almost 12k in all, including getting to the start and back. I saw a lot of young men running too, all about 25 years younger than me, and all about a foot taller! They all looked VERY serious and probably eat 30 miles for breakfast most days 🤣.

Anyway, have a lovely Easter 🐣 everyone. 😊😊😊

Running on a military firing range is one way to get your pace up 🤣Well done Kate , it looks a nice place and what a great 12k

I love this !

25 years younger, a foot taller and 30 miles for breakfast 🤣🤣🤣

Thanks Ian! I couldn’t hear any shooting, so I think it was safe today 🤣. Yes, those young men certainly looked the part!

Lovely jubbly 😀🏃‍♀️👍. Whenever I see such a path I want to find out where it goes. What is life if not for adventures 😀. Even better when the weather’s good. Mooching around the countryside is just lovely on so many levels. Free fun for starters 🙂

Thank you! Oooh yes, free fun - not many things you can say that about anymore. Think my legs will feel it tomorrow but bring it on! 😊

That’s brilliant, nothing like a run over the South Downs, they are on my doorstep too and am often there but much shorter distances to you

Thank you! It took a while, but I’m pretty pleased I finally made the effort. You’ve posted lots about the SD, I think it half motivated me! 😊

Running on the trail is harder but is strengthening to the feet, ankles, core, shoulders and arms 💪. When it’s nice out who wants to be doing anything else 😀

I’m just off out now. Family stuff saw me in Baaaaaarnsley this morning but I’m free now - fed and watered so I’m out the door. Hoping my knee behaves. I’ve self-referred for an NHS physio appointment but whether I’ll hear from them is anyone’s guess🤷‍♀️

Rest up tomorrow if your dogs are barking! 🙂👍

Thank you! Beautiful but a bit deadly - I can feel it today. Don’t think lying on one side all night helped though 🤣.

That does look beautiful Frenc, I wouldn't like those Hills tho. I did walk along of the Sdw and loved being up high with the big light skies.

Thank you Mormor1 ! Some of them nearly got me - you know when you think why on earth did I decide to do this 🤣.

That's when the downhills come in useful!

Yes indeed - what goes up must come down 😁.

Was going to ask what trainers did you go for? 😊

Well I was a bit disappointed, they had no Brooks in my size , tried a few different brands but none seemed right, until I tried the asics gel.. not particularly what I would have chosen but Frenc I really needed them..so they will do for now and I will get a pair of brooks online in the next month or so .. but what a difference it felt running thismornin without my ankles straining 👍😊

Oh that sounds so much better! Even if you get another pair of Brooks, you can use these trainers as back up 😊.

Lovely post. I used to drag my children up St Catherine’s Hill when I lived in Winchester. That was walking and it did poop us out. Fancy having a crack at running it? 😊

Thank you! Do you know I used to run up St. Catherine’s Hill years ago - I was much younger then and training for the one and only Tough Mudder I did, then never did it again, that and running in general until C25K🤣. I did it with a friend who’d been in the army and he was disgustingly fit. It’s funny I kind of forget it’s there although I walked up it loads during lockdown. I will definitely give running up it another go in your honour HeavyFoot ! Watch this space 😁.

Oooh - South Downs - gorgeous. Used to go there on holiday as a small child and remember it with great affection. Then I looked on the map. It's vast! And Rottingdean / Beacon Hill where we used to go are at the other end ...

Still, what a lovely area to run in! 😍

Frenc profile image

Thank you! Lol yes it’s huge, 99 miles from here to Eastbourne. Can’t see myself running that any time soon 🤣.
