3+ years after c25k and this was the first race I'd been tempted into running. Well, since I live in Portsmouth it would have seemed churlish not to, particularly with so many other HU VRBs entering!
I was planning for a time around 1.50, slightly over my last 10 miles a year ago. Things went according to plan for the first half, but then my backache (which usually doesn't affect my running, but I think the long wait to get started due to Covid restrictions was a factor) started to kick in and the sun came out! 7 miles in I decided some brief walks were needed and I finished in 1.58.09.
The support from spectators was amazing - particularly when someone uses your name (as printed on your race number) and it was certainly an experience to remember! After finishing I thought 'not sure I'd be keen to do that again'. However on reporting back to my son, his response was 'we should do it together next year' - doh!

Well done on your run JonathanP - yep, I think a few of us needed those walk breaks today but what a great event! Portsmouth shone in the sunshine!🌞The best thing is it sounds like you will be back for more next year - as will I! Enjoy your bling!🏅
Huge well done JP - it was great to see you out there! I saw people at the start with goosebumps they were so cold, so the sudden temperature change must have been horrendous!
Well done Jonathan! That sun was cheeky coming out for us, but sub 2 hours is still a great time! 👊 I’m glad your son has persuaded you to run next year - I’ve already entered as has someone else! 😅
My niece is and she came to support me at my race on Sunday. I’ve inspired her to run, and she’s taking me to an out of town venue in a few weeks time so we can do a 5k together 🙂🏃♀️🏃♀️ I think she’s hoping none of her pupils will be there 😎
Very well done Jonathan, it was a very strange start compared to previous years and I’m sorry that the cool wind while waiting around affected your back. You had a very good time considering you walked for the first time ever. It was great to see you at parkrun and before the run yesterday.
There is an early bird price if you sign up for next year now, so get your son to commit and I am sure you will have a great time.
Please note for next year cheekychipmunks , TailChaser and Sandie1961 , not many people queuing for loos behind Jonathan at the meeting place.
I've finally signed up for the Chester Metric Marathon - I imagine the dates will be too close but I'll have a look. Failing next year I may try the year after - I have unfinished business with GSR!!! Are you doing it again ?
I always think of races a bit like having kids: hours of pain and sweat and tears, then it’s finished and the endorphins take over, then it’s ‘shall we have another one?’ 🤣
Great stuff JP, so I'm looking foward to the father-son double report this time next year! (And who knows what the weather will be doing by then, nothing surprising I'm sure???)
Well done JP! Sorry we didn’t get to meet up - darned loos! We’re also currently trying to persuade youngest kitten that he’d really enjoy it and that it would be much better than spotting the South West trains whilst waiting for us! It was so much fun (apart from the head wind that had been promised to us as a tail wind…). See you next year? 🤞🤞🤞
A superb run and report from you, and well done! I love the smiley photo, and how nice to have a race on your own doorstep 😊. I guess you’ll be doing it all again next year 🤣. 🏅
