Hydration vest inaugural run

I did my first long run with my new hydration vest this morn. The weather was nice at 7:30am, sunny with a cool breeze here and there. It wound up a 25k run, largely along wooded, shaded trails and the hydration held up nicely throughout. I had an almost full water bladder on leaving and finished around half of it by the end. It’s not a big brand name vest and only $30 so I was a bit skeptical. Had to use baking soda and water to get rid of the plastic taste last night, and today it tasted fine. The heavier pack asked more of my back muscles and a weak one was a little pulled this morn, but feeling better now. One thing I knew not to do was wear this with a running vest because of chafing issues, so I wore a t-shirt and all was fine. Feeling more comfortable to take it out on longer lonely trails now :)

Thanks Floss. Yes I am feeling better with extending the distance a little more too now. It was very nice in the early cooler bit especially

I fell out with mine after wearing it with a vest! Two little spots of chafing on my arms that took forever to heal :D Definitely a great way to carry water mixed with fuel on a long run with sleeves though.

Yeah, I read a product review on the vest and someone complained about the chafing on bare skin which makes sense, so a layer of fabric is needed for sure. You can carry so much in these things!

Sounds like a good result with the hydration vest, Decker - and well done on your run. I can only dream of 25k..!😀

Thanks Sandra, yeah good investment I think, and a tidy little pack without the bladder liner too. I’ve just increased the distance slowly to get used to it and prep for the longer mara distances to come. 20 is the new 10 as my run leader joked when I mentioned it :) You will certainly be there too if distance is what you want, I thought the same thing earlier on too 🙂

Wow, a nice 25 k run! The best sounds like a good deal too.

Thanks Lav, it was a beautiful morning to run on. The vest was a a steal on Amazon. It’s just got the basics and storage was minimal, but it did the job

Excellent. An easy tip is to shake both bladder and hose after rinsing and store in the freezer to prevent any bacteria getting hold. Just take out an hour or so before you want to use/fill.

Ah thanks for the tip Jo!

I love my hydration pack! I find 500ml is fine unless it’s hot. I also store mine in the freezer. Oh and I’ve worn mine with a vest and had no issues.

Yes 500 was about all I needed on this one. Will be trying the freezer idea out too

Makes life easier 🤣 if you hold it upside down you can suck the air out to stop it sloshing around 👍🏽

Took me some time to realize there was a kink in the line. Nearly blew my lung out trying!

Sweet! Looks like a great place for a long run. I tried my hydration vest for the first time with a running vest and fortunately had no chafing issues, at least with that top. I haven't tried the bladder just the front soft flasks, but will be testing out the bladder on next weekend's long run, I think. I'm glad your hydration pack is working for you. I was looking at the Teton one on amazon before I got lured away by the Solomon vest 😆 but am super pleased with all that I can carry and love the fit.

Nice, yeah I figured I would work with the beginner vest for now and maybe go for a Salomon next year if I am still into trails :)
