Can anyone recommend a waterproof running jacket that is actually waterproof (without breaking the bank) please?

I personally prefer to get wet than run in a truly waterproof jacket - they simply don’t breathe and can get very sweaty inside, defeating the object somewhat!

I own a Trespass high-viz showerproof jacket (inexpensive from Amazon) which I wear when warming up/cooling down, and I wear it whilst running sometimes too. It keeps the worst of the rain off without overheating.

Just my opinion - others may have fabulous recommendations! Good luck. 💦

Thanks for replying - bit of a theme developing here.

I'll take your advice and go for breathability over water repellence.

Happy running

Yep, just get wet. It’s not uncomfortable: rain keeps you cool. It’s only an issue if you have to keep the wet clothes on for a long time after the run, it’s not a problem during it.

Wear clothes of quick drying fabric and plan a route that ends near your hot shower and dry clothes. If you’re ever at a parkrun or something where you have to drive home without getting changed you’ll find that if you wear the right things five minutes with the hot blower on in the car will dry everything except your shoes - so put spare footwear in the boot of the car and run through the puddles to your heart’s content.

I have a showerproof running jacket but I mainly use it as a second layer if it’s cold or for visibility on winter nights. The hood sometimes helps keep the rain off my specs but a baseball cap would do that too. I do own a high quality lightweight jacket that’s breathable and properly waterproof but I wear that for walking. I wouldn’t normally think of running in it.

Thanks for your advice too

Quick drying running top is on my shopping list.

To be honest quick drying, wicking and breathable are what to look for in any running gear regardless of weather. Those three, and usually you want lightweight as well (layers are better than heavy garments if it’s cold).

I can't help, but hello!!! How are you?

Hi Abi - all good here thank you.

I took a break from jogging over lockdown because the footpaths were unusually busy with people getting their 1 hour's exercise. Plus, the lack of In-Real-Life events put a bit of a damper on my enthusiasm. Thankfully, Barnes Fitness near Reading recently resurrected their SUPathon like a phoenix from the ashes of lockdown. Paddleboard round Dinton Pastures lake then a 5k run which was brilliant, well organised, totally safe and FUN.

The relaxation of lockdown (round here anyway), cooler and very much wetter weather has left the paths muddy but deserted so I'm out there again.

Hope all is good with you and yours.

Stay safe.

Bob

Lovely to see you back here again xxx

I do like the sound of your SUPathon!! I have been meaning to do something like that, but the weather has not been kind 😂

Muddy but deserted = awesome!!!

I saw an amazing waterproof jacket in my local running shop today. It was as light as a feather too. Price was £220 😬😳

Thanks Brian - 220 quid is a bit steep for me too - maybe a joint Christmas/birthday/anniversary pressie from my family.

Happy running

Gosh I’d rather get wet for that price... 🤪

I have a Nike one I picked up in a sale. It doesn't keep me totally dry because I get so warm running. But I find it comfortable all the same and don't get as wet as without it. I think the main thing for me is the feel of the fabric - mine is very soft so doesn't feel uncomfortable when it's wet. I only wear it when the rain is reasonably heavy. I may wear it tomorrow!!! Hope all's well with you.

Ooo good point about the feel of the fabric. I like to run on my own not with Russel (rustle) - sorry ;-)

Happy running tomorrow

I wear a Trespass Quikpak, it's quite roomy and does its job. Living in the west of Scotland, its well used!

I don’t own a waterproof run jacket. My fave lightweight run jacket is an Aldi special hooded lightweight run jacket for £6.99. I bought a matching cap for £3.99 at the same time. I’ve worn these to death and still do

You only need a fully waterproof taped seam run jacket if you’re running in fells and mountains, possibly overnight, where being cold and wet could spell disaster Races specify exactly the levels of protection required

The ultramarathon lass who has a YouTube channel reviews some. Wild ginger runner or something similar. She describes them as being sweaty

I have an £18 Karrimor brilliantly reflective run jacket but I much prefer the Aldi one 😃

They’re so light you just tie them round your middle when you’ve warmed up - unless it’s pelting it down of course 🙂👍

Thank you for your reply. I take your point about ultra-marathons there is no way my little excursions are anywhere near that.

Taking into account the great advice all you lovely people on this forum have given me I'll head off to my local running store debit card in hand to buy something light, breathable, quiet, reflective, water repellent (without going to the expense of waterproof).

Thanks again everyone

Happy running

:-)

Decathlon is pretty good too!

I ran in the ancient Aldi jacket today but had to keep taking it on and off as it got too hot even though it's very light. Rain loomed the entire time but thankfully held off til I got home

I have a breathable cycling jacket that keeps out all but stair rods rain. It might be worth looking at cycling jackets if you like something a bit longer in the sleeves (so no need for gloves) & back( warm dry backside.) 😀

Great Idea - I'll widen the scope of my search.

Thank you
