Waterproof jacket and wind proof trousers - recommendations sought

I’ve just registered for some Autumn trail runs which have an equipment requirement of waterproof jacket and wind proof trousers. These are in different parts of the Peak District so there is every chance the weather will require them.

Any recommendations?

I’m certainly not made of money but I will pay for decent kit if it is worth it. Equally I’m willing to buy something cheap but good.

I took a lightweight Ron Hill breathable ( got in a sale online) for my HM in March..it rolled up small and fitted in the back of my Salomon running hydration vest..didn't need it..but was glad of my warm running tee..although I did take that off on the return lap..:)

Hi Jay, I’ve bought a lot of my kit from Decathlon, including a waterproof jacket and trousers. They stood me in good stead over last autumn and winter and weren’t expensive. They might be worth looking at.

Certainly don’t need them today, in south London anyway!🥵

I’ll be interested to see what other recommendations you get, as there’s always a need for decent kit for all sorts of weather🌞🔥🌪⛈🌦💧⛄️☔️

I’ve tried all sorts of waterproof jackets and couldn’t get away with them so I ended up paying for an OMM which is what most people at my club have. Expensive but worth it.

I went for a Salomon Bonatti Running Jacket. Extremely lightweight, packs up very small indeed. Have run a wet 10k race in it, so it works 😀 They are pricey, but got mine last year for a little over half price from sportsshoes.com.

Not sure what they mean by windproof trousers (for running), that’s a new one in me. I have a pair of running tights for the cold, or there’s track suit bottoms. For hiking I wear craghopper hiking trousers, but don’t think I’d want to run in them. Interested to see what people say about windproof trousers,

The Bonatti is what I have my eye on. So nice...but, as you say, pricey. Good to hear you found it good.

Anything that is fully waterproof will make you sweet like a teenager on a first date (nothing wrong with that but not in the running context). I got a yellow thing from sports direct for 15 or so quid. Yeah, it keeps me dry but if it's bucketing down the water will come through. As for the bottoms? Summer it's shorts, winter it's shorts. Keeps the ventilation going. If it gets to lower temperatures powered by wind and if the run will be in a slower side, long tights and shorts on top. Cyclist with a twist kinda look.

Waterproofs are mandatory for some events. I’ve never heard that about wind proof trousers though.

I don't get the trousers bit, tbh. Tops are fine if they really insist although that should also be the people's choice, but lower floors? Every day l get another confirmation as to why l made the right choice about running alone in my own time.

Oh for the love of god.... This has got to do with omnipresent Health & Safety lunacy. I can see a person in an office, somewhere, making up a list. I recently attended a music event where every performer had to present a PAT certificate for every piece of their equipment. Once the backstage was rammed with stage hands holding various certs, causing delays, a poor stage manager simply waved everyone in. Same with your run. When people turn up wearing scarves, cans of hot soup and blankets somebody will probably go, 'oh, hang on'... Madness.....

Given that these are autumn runs at some altitude in the Peak District, I get that they don't want people in skimpy shorts, broken down along the trail, dying of exposure...but a foil blanket would cover that (in all senses).

But I've signed up and will comply. Decathlon have some cheap ones (and if I can find my walking ones and if they seem light enough...)

They are afraid that you may sue them if you catch cold. This way they play 'told you so' tactics. If l had spare time I'd turn up as a visitor/cheer leader wearing nothing but tight, skimpy Speedo swim gear and stare them out.

I think there are Peak District by-laws prohibiting this. 🤣

Hope you find some suitable ones Jay. I have nothing useful to add, so I’ll follow with interest and might nick any recommendations! Hope you don’t mind! 😅

The very thought of water and wind proof gear at the moment brings me out in a sweat though! 🥵🥵🥵🥵
