Every now and then I have this crazy thought in my head "let's hit the hills tonight" and so I plan a route that includes as many uphill sections as I can squeeze in.
Last night I hit 300m elevation gain over a 10k run within the hour. I was trying to get 500m but that meant running up and down the same hill 10times so decided to have a little more variety.
But it got me wondering, what is the shortest run you've managed to squeeze in the biggest elevation gain? Have you managed a run with more than 500m of climbing in less than 10k of distance?

To be fair, I'm even less likely to choose a hill on my bike. That said, there is a hill running route I did back in September that I'm curious to know how well I'd do cycling.
Nice elevation. I have a plan and it includes a generous amount of hills. I'm currently doing LeJog but after that I'm intending to take on the Everest Virtual challenge. 😂 hills all week long.....
How's the LeJog going? I nearly signed up to do over LeJog over 12months but decided that was probably to ambitious. It would only need me to fall behind a couple of runs and I'd never catch up.
Looking at m/km, for me it's 333m in 19.36km. Mind you, it's 5.5km (and back) just to get to the hilly bit. Cutting that out gives about 260m in 8.36km. That was back in 2019 when I was training for the Forest of Dean HM (which has a total climb of 320m).
Back then, on some of the steeper bits, I was faster than some of the cyclists.
Interesting question Bike_and_Run . I don't really seek out hills, it's more like they aren't optional where I live!
If I run up the road through the forest it starts off with 3km uphill, and elevation gain over that stretch is about 180m, depending on where I start. If I'm going that way I'll probably run about 12km with an elevation gain of around 275m-300m.
Fwiw my longest run to date was 22.7km, 470m elevation gain. My shortest was a jog home after a run followed by a walk - that came in at 1.47km and 87m elevation gain.
Not sure this proves anything except that I run some really random distances - I've hardly any Strava stats for proper round figures like 5k, 10k, 10 miles or whatever!
Did a little digging of the archives back to last September 244meters in 9 km, easy just go for a run around in the Pyrennes although in my case that's more run a bit walk a lot in the Pyrennes. Hoping to get back there this year and maybe have a crack at upping that figure. ( he says optimistically )😁
Now there’s an interesting challenge B&R, I have to incorporate some hill work in my HM plan so a good reason to do some experimenting/planning, and strangely I quite like hills, well going up them anyway 🤷🏻♀️ knees not so keen on the downhill yet but I’m working on that one 🤣😄
I managed 212 m elevation gain in 8 km last summer, had to drive up to the hills to do that though. Usually I run for at least 5k before I get to the proper hilly bits. I did the Beachy Head 10K a few years ago, that was 300 m in under an hour - and it was awesome!!
That gave me the idea for a cool (post lockdown!!) challenge - drive to Eastbourne (it's < an hour for me) and run down and up Beachy Head a few times. 9.86 km = 540 m 😁
On Sunday I went a 15K walk, 9.3 miles, I recorded that walk on Relive with a video of the walk, part of the walk is along a canal then up a steep hill, according to Relive the height from the canal to the top of the hill is 682 feet although according to other maps the hill is 528ft above sea level, the elevation according to Relive was 2,664 feet, I am not sure if Relive is correct with those statistics.
You could check on an OS map AlMorr ? Relieve is telling you 812m elevation over 15k, which sounds a bit OTT to me, unless you went up and down that steep hill all the time!
Only once, the canal according to OS is 156 ft above sea level at that part, the hill according to OS is 528ft above sea level, so from the canal to the top of the hill I climbed as part of that walk 372ft,
Ah, good question! I've just had a scan through my stats! 297m in 10k for me - a very up and down trail run! Now you've mentioned it, I feel a 2021 target coming on..!🙂
I do seek out hills, even my local runs usually come in at over 200m. My best elevation was in Spain, 3780 ft/1152m but that was over 27 miles and they were great hills.
Sadly there's no easy way to search strava by elevation as I'm sure I could find something respectable under a 10k... 🤔
