Presents for the older runner

My daughter clearly understands me, and knows what makes runners tick. The T-shirt pictured says it all; I may collapse in a heap but that is no reason to miss out on a possible PB! Our younger sporty son went for a snazzy massage ball (which I used to good effect on my calf as soon as I had opened the present!) and a box full of gels. I have never tried gels before; I have read some adverse comments here about slimy consistency, but at least I can have a free shot at trying some out for myself. Despite having a niggly end to the year I am still thinking about running distances!!Hope everyone had a fun Christmas Day. 2020; you are nearly gone πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€

A great t-shirt Beachcomber66 and it sounds like your family have your number. We received a sis and a 5 live gel too. So it will also be a first for us. Good job as a mouse has moved into our house and he nibbled into UTS tailwind. He’s probably full of energy now! 🐁

I have a lovely image of a hyped up mouse zooming round the neighbourhood leaving a trail of bewildered, wheezing, panting cats in his wake 😍

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy510 Milesβ€’ in reply tolinda9389

I wish! Unfortunately, I think he’s still zooming around between kitchen floor and cellar ceiling. Humane traps have not yet caught him despite him eating the bait! Any ideas gratefully received. 🐭 🐁

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathonβ€’ in reply toDexy5

Ahhh, annoying .... only idea I have is to triple bag the Tailwind πŸ˜€

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy510 Milesβ€’ in reply tolinda9389

That went straight in the bin , along with bread and pittas.

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply toDexy5

Dad used to tie a piece of bacon into the trap so that the mouse had to work harder to get it.

Kit Kat. They adore it

Granspeed profile image
Granspeedβ€’ in reply toDexy5

Oh dear, sounds like Supermouse. We had his clan in our previous house after the cat died. 😱 We finally put all edibles from the larder in strong plastic boxes with tight lids and stuck the bait to the floor of the trap - I think we used chocolate stuck down with peanut butter in the end. But you have to release them miles and miles away or they come back!

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy510 Milesβ€’ in reply toGranspeed

He’s a very clever mouse. He does like peanut butter and bird seed but manages to eat it without getting caught in 2 different types of humane traps, and a little nipper. Now forced to look at other methods πŸ₯ΊπŸ˜’

Borrow a cat? Seriously the most efficient method.

O dear Dexy 5 regarding that mouse, as that song goes (in the Scottish language)There's a moose loose about this hoose,

I hope you find him and get rid of him.

Sorry to hear about your niggly end BC!!!Great gifts, but beware the gels ... (loads of people must like them though, given how many companies sell them).

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply tolinda9389

Not my finest piece of word composition πŸ˜‚.

I have read reports of gels being slimy and people finding them hard to swallow. I will report back!

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathonβ€’ in reply toBeachcomber66

I've only tried a couple. Didn't like the consistency but could probably have gotten beyond that with the right flavour. My main issue was getting into a horrible sticky mess!

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply tolinda9389

Mine are β€œHigh Fives” ; a box of 20 with various flavours. Some of them are caffeinated. I should probably wear the T-shirt when I try one for the first time!

As soon as I get up to 10k again I will give them a whirl and report back..... I won't eat the banana ones though....... never been able to eat them.

I quite like the high 5s. I got them with my Brighton 10k Entry. I ordered a box of the orange aqua. They are very natural and not squishy but watery and easy to swallow on the run. You have to be careful not to spill them though.

Ha ha! Brilliant T-shirt. πŸ˜‚ Santa brought me a snazzy hi vis long sleeved running top so now there is no excuse to avoid running in the dark πŸŒƒπŸŒŒπŸŒ›πŸ˜

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply toBirdlady64

Running in the dark is brilliant. I go up into the woods...bats flitting about, owls hooting and total focus on what I can see through my headlamp beam. Dog’s eyes shine out and dance around like fire flies....πŸ™‚

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply tomisswobble

No. Calf feels much looser today though, so I am tempted. Just a short trip before Bella strikes....maybe. Much easier when I have a physio telling me what to do! Her theory is that muddy trails are causing the problem..but all of my runs are on trails!

Fab t-shirt BC! Hope you and Mrs BC had a lovely day xx

Thanks Sandie. Had my mum around for the day; Following a pre-match chat, Molly was superbly behaved. No jumping up and just played hunt the tissue trying to get her nose into her pockets! Chill day for Mrs BC and me today; might try a little trot later onπŸ‘

Hi cheeky, thanks. We made the best of it. My main job was making the rum sauce πŸ˜‹ and acting as consultant chef when required!! Rum sauce is a tradition I brought from my family; maybe rooted in Dad’s naval service.

Love it BC! 🀣🀣 Massage balls are great too, good for rolling around on your plantar and in between your shoulder blades πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply toTailChaser

I have spiky ones for quads and hamstrings, and this new smooth one seems to be good for my calf. I need to alter the balance between time spent making me able to run and actual run time though!

I hope you get it to even out BC 🀞

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply toTailChaser

Just had a thought; I started using an extra heavy exercise band last week after I snapped my heavy one......maybe it is a bit too much for me!

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserMarathonβ€’ in reply toBeachcomber66

Maybe? Also, do you wear compression socks? It’s not good to wear them for every run πŸ€”

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply toTailChaser

I have never worn compression socks; it did cross my mind to give them a try....but maybe not!!Everything feels good so far this morning 🀞.

Next step is to get Molly out to the beach and then I will try my exercises when I get back (without the xtra heavy band!) . It is a strange one; my calves don’t usually give me any bother. Getting old maybe ☹️

Love the T-shirt! I like gels tbh. Just not SIS. They’re gross. Like wallpaper paste. My favourite are torq. All the best for 2021 ☺️

Beachcomber66 profile image

Thanks Tasha; hope you have a great 2021 too. I will report on the gels after sampling!

Saw the title and went to "Zimmer Frame". 😁 I have a similar Tee, but cycling inclined. Mice are a challenge, I have a grain bin in the barn where we keep the peanuts for the bird feeders, 🐭its zinc lined but the blighters are knawing their way through the wooden lid. Agatha Christie 🎭time for them I'm afraid.

Dexy5 profile image

Yes I don’t mind mice outside, but not in my kitchen thank you. I’ve given him the option to relocate but now I’m getting tough.

What a fab shirt. Enjoy wearing it. Hope you get rid of the mouse 😳

Beachcomber66 profile image

Trouble is you can end up with a nest if they are not dealt with quickly. That happened in my garage in 2019, and then the humane traps I bought just couldn't do the job effectively.☹️
