Since getting a horrible heel blister a few weeks ago, I’ve gone to double socks which I do for hiking: a very thin layer, then a standard sock. That way, the friction stays between the two sock layers.
Some people seem prone to blisters while others don’t but I see many posts here about them and I’m sure someone will be along to better advise you.
I’m lucky and have never suffered from blisters but I do have a little hard ridge on a couple of my toes that get worse and more painful on longer runs. I cover them with a blister plaster and wear double layer socks in the winter and generally single layer in the summer. Even the single layer socks have nice cushioning 🙂. Hilly is my go-to brand. But the preferred brand of socks is a personal thing I’d say and you’ll maybe have to try a few to see which suit you best.
I have had Hilly Twin Skin socks for all my runs, no blisters, ask someone in your local sports shop when you get your running shoes for professional advice.
See that is what I've always had too " more mile" ..for all my running..More Mile knee socks.
Then during lockdown 28.5.20 BROOKS TRANSCEND 7 training shoes that I've ran 143km in to date.
I also have BROOKS TRANSCEND 5 ( GAIT analysed ). I bought the brooks TRANSCEND 7s based upon advice from brooks online and also from start fitness.
I'm now running more, pushing from 5km through 10km up to 12km atm with intent to reach HM. I'm following plans and also joined a local running group too.. to train with these etc
My problem is one of blisters..same places on both feet. Big toe , upper outside and near base of foot/ outer edge.
What i know is these blisters seem to be in same places where more mile sock toe joins foot and where the under coloured pattern ridges are of socks.
Only thing's that have changed are training shoes and my km's.
Just looking for advice initially ...as in information what i can do... change sock type? Change shoes?
I never get blisters either. Most of the year I run with thin M&S running socks. In the winter, I wear thin woollen socks. It seems to me that the key is to get shoes that fit properly.
I've only had one pair of Brooks shoes, so I don't know how much the different models vary, but it is possible. Are you wearing shoes that are 1/2-1 size up from your normal size? That's usually important when you progress to longer runs, as your feet swell up then.
Well...ermmm.. shoe size 6 / 6.5 and both my Brooks are size 7s, which for TRANSCEND5s i was gait analysed for and the TRANSCEND7s i was advised by Brooks n the sports shop online to go for.
I'm relatively new to all here so its huge learning curve..
I wasn't initially intending to push for HM .. but I've been bitten by the bug and needed a focus with a plan to follow..
So here i am 52yrs , 1stone less and running up to 12km.. albeit in 1hr 45min but that's not my aim... and I'm in a hilly area.. so slow n steady 🙂
I’m the same with size 6 normal shoes and size 7 Brooks GTS Adrenaline running shoes, but have never had blisters. If your heel moves as you run you could do the heel lock lacing.
I bought hilly twin skin socks but my toes felt crumpled up in them so only wore them once.
I've always had " more mile" ..for all my running..More Mile knee socks..many pairs.

Hmmm. If I understand correctly you have blisters in a similar place to me - mine are sort of where the insole joins the side of the shoe, just down from the big toe where the foot starts to widen. Mine are on both feet. I was fine until a 13km about two years ago. I do not have a full solution yet.
I have tried Brooks, Saucony and now Hoka and they all give the same problem I have tried wide fit and standard.
I now wear hilly twin skin socks on every run. I wear a compeed plaster and then a layer of Rocktape ( I used to use Leukotape, but it doesn't stretch so is awkward where I need to put it, stretchy KT tape is much easier). I now only wear these during the run itself so the skin gets chance to dry and harden between runs. Ibdid buy some patches that stick on the inside ofnyour shoes about 6 months ago, but I still haven't tried them 🤔🙄
I can honestly say it is blister pain (burn) that stops me going further, that slows me down part way through a long run, it's bloomin' awful! If you come up with any other solutions please do share. Hopefully yours is a one off and you can get on top of it, in the meantime you have my sympathy 😥
I still run HM distance, but with a grimace! I always have a pair of flip flops in my post-run bag 😅
Kinesiology tape is a stretchy, sticky tape used to treat injuries. Rocktape is one brand (more expensive than other brands, but sticks well) amazon.co.uk/dp/B008RAT3S0/...
The only time I've had blisters was from a long run when I decided to nip up my trainers, bad idea
Now I tie them loose ish when I get them and never touch them again I have it so they don't/won't fall off but I can slip my feet in and out of them without undoing them
Some will claim its bad for the shoe but its something I've seen several hundred runners at the running club do and no shoe issues
There maybe a few options depending on where you get your blisters.
1. It could be the trainers not being quite right for your feet during the longer runs as they expand more. Expensive to change though.
2. It could be the fit of the shoe not being great which allows more movement of the foot hence friction.
3. Just bad luck!!
Ways of dealing with it depends where the blisters are and how bad they get.
For small blisters always in the same location, you can put zinc oxide tape or kt tape directly on the hot spot (I did this for my marathon). Alternatively, try double layer socks which work well but you can find your feet get hotter and your shoes may feel tighter.
For blisters between toes try injinji toe socks.
There are may products out there but it is a trial and error on what works for you. I would try changing socks or taping first before changing trainers.
I love Injinji toe socks - they come in different weights & styles but all stay still on my sensitive feet. However, everybody’s feet are individual so trial and assessment is the key. Good luck in the hunt!
I also use more mile socks and have a pair of 1000 mile socks, no blisters! The 1000 milers, although I haven't tried to run a 1000 miles in them straight off😆 are very comfy but can be a tad warm in Summer
My wife swears by hilly twin skinned socks for comfort..
Hi, I’ve never had a problem with blisters (so far)🤞but I use ‘More Miles’ and ‘Runderwear’ usually👍 The Runderwear compression long socks are particularly good if you like that sort of thing. They aren’t cheap though😕 They’re quite tough to get on in the first place but we’ll worth the effort, at least that’s what I’ve found!😊
I can't believe no one summoned me to talk about leukotape!!
Yes, I get blisters without fail above 15k, in any shoe and any sock. Some people just do, unfortunately. I have very mobile feet (I have hypermobility and literally only made that possible connection when I wrote that there!) so they flex all over the place. I get them on the end of my toes where they splay wide and also hit the roof of my shoe (mechanics alas, not shoe size) but also giant ones on the arch of my leading foot. If I am running further than 15k, or maybe even 12, I put a bit of preemptive leukotape there like a bit of extra skin and know I will not blister.
Leukotape is the bees! Other zinc oxide tapes are probably available. I won't use regular kt tape because it's ludicrously expensive and also doesn't always stick, especially if you get wet, and a bit of folded up tape in your sock is absolutely going to blister you!
Sock-wise, injinji socks really help with the blisters on the end of my toes. They don't rub when my toes splay, though I have to accept if I run a lot I'll just lose some toesnails anyway 😔
Where does one buy leukotape and injinji socks from?
Interestingly that I had / have one blister on the end of 2nd toe of my leading right foot, it's all loose/dry now; never have had any pain!
Off to see podiatrist on Monday.
My other blisters are on sides of both big toes ( where my more more socks toe meets foot for sock ) & also on the sides of the base/pad of big toe(where there are ridges on base of foot of sock).
I got mine from my partner who introduced me to it, he uses it for MMA because it sticks really well even when he's grappling, so I just pinched his 😂 But here it is, for example:
My shoes are Brooks Transcend 7s, I bought these online during lockdown after I had liased with Brooks and my sports shop online( pre purchase) as previously I have Brooks Transcend 5s which I had a gait analysis for for.
I'm currently running in More Mile knee socks (that I've always had several pairs of ) and purchased during lockdown BROOKS TRANSCEND 7 training shoes that I've ran 143km in to date.
I also have BROOKS TRANSCEND 5 ( GAIT analysis done ). I bought the brooks TRANSCEND 7s based upon advice from sports shop and also from brooks too.

To be honest, everyone is so different that it is very much a case of trial and error on the whole! If you're noticing a pattern to your blisters definitely good to try and mix it up to see if it's the sock, because that's an easy fix. Hilly socks are a quality brand, and twin skins can certainly help with friction. If you still still blister after that you can look at the shoe, or more preventative measures like tape. Blisters are a real pain, but manageable one way or another!
