Something strange has been happening to me lately. I'm starting to speed up. The reason I find it odd is that on two of my last 5 k runs I have felt that I have been running more slowly. I figured I'd be sensible and try to hold back and make the runs easier. And been surprised by very good paces.
We've had a couple of days of snow this week, so I pushed my 14 k long run back to yesterday, when the streets had started thawing. I ran a slightly different route than usual - my long descent didn't come until about 5 k into the run. I actually ran fairly slowly down the big hill, as I wasn't sure how slippery it was. I didn't feel up to running up that hill again, so I decided to finish the run in the city center and make the last 7 k fairly flat, like the LLHM. And I ended up with a pace of 6:40! This is one of my fastest long run paces ever outside of an event. It's even faster than my recent 5 ks. I'm not sure what's going on. Again I took things easy, and actually felt that I was running quite slowly.
It looks like I'm finally putting the last two years of injury and recovery behind me. The kids were completely uninterested in their mother's happy news, so I felt I had to share with people who understand.
