As part of my bridge to 10k journey I read Jeff Galloways ‘half marathon, you can do it’ and today I headed out to Jeff for the first time.
I now realise two things... I am running my long runs too fast but don’t think I can slow down and the second thing is how quickly 30’seconds goes by. My ratio was 3 mins run to 30 secs walk and I covered my furthest distance to date feeling pretty damn strong at the end.
My plan is to run this route each week for the rest of Jan and then add a little more in Feb once I run this whole route instead of jeffing it

My HM isn't until Sept, it is a very personal one as last year I did the 5k route and set off to run as far as I could, if I would have had my glasses on I would have been able to see the 1 mile marker lol. The thought of returning and running a HM 12 months later is a real motivator for me so I will keep adding my distance although at the rate I am going I could be out on the course for almost 3hrs which I think is a very LONG time lol.
Hope you and the family had a fabulous festive season
Super plan 👍🏼 Christmas was bitter sweet. lovely with the kids really into it this year but Unfortunately we lost my dad on Christmas Day but at 94 he had a good innings
You can slow down. Yep, you can. Slow it down and run smart. Jeffing is brilliant. I read that book too and he knows his onions. Read what he says about going to quick
I listen to Coach Bennett (Nike) and he is always on about slowing down and starting runs the right way - at the start! You get to the end easier if you just slow it down. Patience!
I just seem to have 1 pace that I go at no matter how far I am running. I am going to make a VERY conscious effort to go slower next week when I do my long run.
Yeah do that! It's sensible. Slow it right down til you have your breathing under control. When you run with your breathing under control you can speed up at any point when you want- or need to, either to get up a hill or to do a bit of Fartlekking etc, or just to relieve boredom. The thing is though, you can do that if you're in control of the run and not gasping for breath throughout the whole thing Longer runs do present the opportunity for practice at slowing things down.
Ah that is the thing, my breathing is under control and I am running at a conversational pace as I don't like being out of breath. However according to my book I should be going at a pace of around 15:40/mile for my long runs in training and I am doing them 4 mins a me faster than that without feeling as though I am exerting myself.
I will be sure to keep you all updated with my progress as the weeks go by and I really do enjoy it even when the weather is miserable
Forget that bit of the book. Everyone has their own pace. If your breathing is relaxed and under control then you are at a good long run pace.
I know what you mean about not wanting to be out of breath. If you ever do want to increase pace then take control of it by doing intervals or hill repeats. Or just do what makes you happy.
I agree with SlowLoris. Everyone has their own easy pace! If you have a monitor, try taking a look at your heart rate - that's another good indicator of whether you are overexerting yourself or not. If it feels easy and you could go for longer, then it probably is easy 😀
Can you find someone to run with? I was building up to 10 miles while the missus was building to 10k, so I ran however far she was going at her pace🏃🏽♀️🏃♂️then carried on for the rest of my run somewhat faster🏃♂️. On my own, like you, I tended for a long time to start too fast to go as far as I wanted.
