Hello lovely running fiends ๐Ÿ‘น

So, yesterday I โ€œtreatedโ€ myself to a sports massage. She gave my IT band a good old pummel (to the point where I have got bruises ๐Ÿ˜ฑ), and then had a wee fiddle around my hip flexors. After some fiddling, she announced that they were very tight. ๐Ÿค” She then proceeded to loosen them up. I am ashamed to admit that I squeaked a few times during that...

Anyway, I feel much better after that! And I also got sent away with some good stretches especially for the pesky flexors. ๐Ÿ‘ I did read online that tight hip flexors can cause ITB friction...so with me stretches, swimming and glute strengthening work, I am starting to think I might be fine for my HM ๐Ÿคž. Going for a wee test run on Friday.

Thanks Linda. Of course, it could all go horribly wrong on the day, but nothing to lose, I can stop if it flares up again. ๐Ÿ‘ xxx

Good for you Sadie, youโ€™ve gotta love a decent sports massage!

My sports masseuse has help me so much, not just with the physical massage but also the advice. Sheโ€™s been running for years and doing her first Ironman event this month so got to respect that and listen to her.

Good luck, letโ€™s hope you get that HM done! Just take it easy and Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ll get there๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ‘

Honestly, I could have kissed her after (but that would be frowned upon). She used to run HMs herself, so is v. understanding.

Thank you for your good wishes. ๐Ÿ˜˜ Look forward to running with you one day!

That would be good fun. ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Iโ€™ll keep an eye on your progress but donโ€™t come out running again until youโ€™re ready.๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘

Hi Sadie. Sounds quite an experience! Not sure if they were squeaks of pain or pleasure, but either way hoping this all helps you be on top form for the HM.

Oh, definitely pain, Stephen. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ But no pain no gain...and thank you. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Good luck Sadie. Youโ€™re a smart one and youโ€™ll know to dial it back if thereโ€™s any discomfort on Friday - but hereโ€™s hoping the sports massage did the trick and there isnโ€™t! ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž

๐Ÿ˜ Yes, she really hurt me this time, but I still love her! I am feeling things are improving, Tasha. Managed a punishing Pilates class today. ๐Ÿ‘

Oooooh, sounds like exactly what I need but too afraid to have!! Mind you I expect everything's tight, seized up or dropping off :)

I really admire your dedication and determination to do everything you can for your running. You absolutely deserve success - it's coming your way, I know it xxx

Hey Fishypieface ...how you doing? Lovely to hear from you, even with bits dropping off! X

Not bad thanks my lovely! :) Still stuck at 4/5k with a dodgy arse cheek! Need to get back in the game, have let things slide over the summer! You ok? Doin' your thing and enjoying it? xx

Mummycav profile image
Mummycav in reply to Fishypieface

Yes, Iโ€™m doing ok...still getting out there. Iโ€™m glad to hear you are, I canโ€™t believe that arse cheek? Maybe that needs a good massage?! Glad to hear youโ€™re still getting out there though, really glad xxx

Fishypieface profile image
Fishypieface in reply to Mummycav

I know it's a right pain in the arse! :) But only when I run. Exercises don't touch it, I've stretched and squatted my arse off! Needs a good kick up there probably.... At least we are still going, in our own special way! Here's to many more wonderful runs for us all! xxx

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsHalf Marathon in reply to Fishypieface

Seriously FPF, get a sports massage! You have an agitated piriformis I reckon, and you need a burly sports masseuse to stick their bony elbow in your cheek and inflict some eye watering relief! Very hard for us mortals to be able to get to the piriformis. xxx

You are 100% right.... I need a pair of big girl's pants (or 2) and to grow a pair!!! :)

๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ (Itโ€™s really not that bad). ๐Ÿ˜˜

Hey you... how are you... have you been around here much? I miss your posts!

Fishypieface profile image
Fishypieface in reply to Oldfloss

I'm good thanks! I don't have much to post about that wouldn't bore the pants off everyone unfortunately - arsecheekitis still keeping me at about 5k and I'm too chicken to get it sorted out with a hands-on professional!! Which is what I need.....So I struggle on, wriggling on tennis balls to alleviate the pain... which is actually rather good!

Hope you are ok, I know you've had injury to overcome time after time. Hope things are back on track for you. xx

Donโ€™t be scared; it is an exquisite brand of pain ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜‚. And thank you for your very lovely reply, you are a love. I am obsessive, I will get there. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘ xxx

The joys of a sports massage!! It's amazing how much they can fix. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜

I'm lucky, I've trained myself to respond to any painful bits with laughter as if it tickles which actually now, after about 4 years or so of regular sessions it actually does. That way you don't tense up and the muscle relaxes faster... plus you both get free laughter therapy! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

I am SOOOOO ticklish...Iโ€™m not sure I could stand a massage!

GoGo_JoJo profile image

Trust me... it doesn't really tickle unless they're not trying! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ apparently I'm unique in all her experience, everyone else would be howling in agony ๐Ÿคฃ

Thanks Jo! ๐Ÿ˜Š In some respects, I think this visit was more useful than my physio (though he did of course, give me the diagnosis).

And that tickling/laughing trick is something I need to master! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Thanks Richard. To be honest, Iโ€™ll only find out on a long run if I am fixed, and as I am tapering, my next long run will be on the day! Still, she who dares wins, and things are feeling good and strong at the moment...๐Ÿ˜Š

I had a Swiss/Japanese massage last Friday. Loved it, one of my shoulders was really tight, the masseuse sorted it out, I winced when she was working the tension out...shoulder felt normal afterwards. So glad Iโ€™ve had it done... definitely recommend massages. Hadnโ€™t had one in about 10 months.

Sadie-runs profile image

They are the best! Before I started running I think I had only had a couple of massages before in my lifetime! I am totally converted now. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Ooh that bodes well, fingers crossed Sadie that things might improve after that! Did you try that pressure point trigger I sent you? That really helps my ITB, I do it with a tennis ball.

I have monthly sports massages and they really help to keep tight everything at bay. But my fab sports masseuse that Iโ€™ve had for years has just left and I really donโ€™t know what to do now โ˜น๏ธ

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsHalf Marathon in reply to Irishprincess

๐Ÿ˜Š Yes! What I liked about this was that maybe, just maybe, the massage therapist may have pinpointed the cause of the IT issue, which really gives me something to work with. And yes, I am doing that trigger point thingy too. Thank you for that. You are my go-to, by the way. Early on in my running career I had bum pain, and you gave me the figure of four stretch which sorted that out! Do I need to start paying you?!

Hope you find a cracking new sports masseuse soon, Princess. xxx

I made the fatal mistake just before I had my first ever sports massage and said, "I have a high threshold of pain" ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜ฉ I left most of my mascara on the couch that time ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

It isn't agony every time! Tight calves were fine. Back of the knee; quite painful but immediate benefit. Glutes....another matter! A friend went to to get very tight glutes slackened off and was told "this will hurt and will leave bruises!". It did both (she tells me!) and this is a retired ward sister who doesn't take prisoners herself! But, she is now all set for the GNR on Sunday and is no longer dragging one leg. So in some cases, definitely no pain no gain, but it isn't always that way. I used to give feedback, like "ok that hurts, must be the spot".....only encourages them to press harder though!! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Oh I know BC, I have get a sports massage every month, and normally they are fine. But lorks almighty, she was tough on my hips! Did the trick though. ๐Ÿ‘ The piriformis massage is the worst though, when they dig an elbow deep into your bum cheek. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Iโ€™ve reached the wobble stage too- lying awake worrying about being insomniac on race eve; needing the loo - they are some distance from the start; not getting all the way round (ridiculous as I know I can walk if I have to, and have anyway run all but the last 4K of the distance) xxx
