Wow is it hot! I ran 25k today! I had to stop to top up my water after I had drank all my electrolytes and I had 2 toilet stops, both unusual for me, so I didn't run consistently. I took a few walk breaks with my water and I had a shaded pitstop as I was sweltering by the end so I probably ran 24k consistent. I also now know I don't like SIS gels! ๐คข
Let's hope it rains on my Marathon day! ๐คฃ

That's funny. Only this morning I thought maybe I should try them on bike rides. I know they won't taste any better, but I might not get as sticky ๐
Oh my god they are like slime! It made me feel sick on top of the heat but the high 5 are ok,not pleasant and I'd avoid all gels if I could but they did seem to give me a boost. I'm sure they affect my zone for a bit too though! Xx
You should see what Alexandra Hemingsley says about gels in Run Like A Girl (if you havenโt read it, you should. Bestest running book ever). I switched to naked bars and Tailwind. Half a bar every 5k. Gels do give a boost though.
It was very hot indeed! Well done, I'm surprised you needed the wee stops, I find in the heat my body holds on to every bit of fluid! ๐คฃ well done! ๐ช๐ป๐
I think it was the amount I drank. I guzzled a cup of water too, which I know I shouldn't have lol. I thought drinking to need would be fine too but not yesterday. Maybe a mix of the gels and the heat too..... it's all a learning curve isn't it lol. X
Congratulations on running in the heat.! I read an article about athletes having tooth decay from too many gels and sugary drinks, so maybe your right to ditch the gels ๐ i have some I picked up as freebies, yet too try them though x
๐๐๐คข I really don't like them lol. I was following a low carb diet before my marathon training and I usually do any runs of 10k or less on just a cup of coffee. There are more carbs/sugar in one gel than I was eating in a day at times! But they do give the intense energy hit I guess. High 5 are ok...
SIS were like slime for me. SOS are starting to indroduce sugar free electrolytes and revies are dissolvable coffee strips, I may try them. The gels made a difference but the heat and the SIS one made me feel sick! You might be ok with it though.
Thatโs a long run on hot day! I canโt do gels either...the consistency is just ๐คฎ. I didnโt like Tailwind either as it made me feel sick but I only tried it on one long run so I would give it another go. Last half marathon training I used the Revies and liked them although they do stick to the roof of your mouth like glue until they dissolve. I think hydration on the days beforehand and plain water on the run seems to work the best for me. Itโs all just trial and error. Well done on your running. Training in this heat isnโt pleasant.
Thank you. I didn't used to run with anything other than water for my half marathons but I have a feeling I will need something to double it. I think I will try the Revies and alternate between electrolytes and plain water. My biggest issue is going to fast around 17k onwards.... and the heat lol. But all can be adapted apart from the weather lol. I should start thinking about my hydration and food leading upto the runs too. X
I would agree with that although not torrential just light. Did 8miles this morning. Was going to be 18 but too hot and didn't get out early enough (5.58am) but will have another go on Saturday, hopefully it will be cooler.
Yeah lol gentle rain is preferable but then I don't mind any rain. Prefer it to this heat for running! Well done on your 8 miles, you certainly set off earlier than I did yesterday, wise decision! It will be cooler soon I'm sure. X
Thanks. I had hoped to go out about 4.30am but did not wake up until 5am. I am up at 5.30am tomorrow to have breakfast and shower and dress to go to work but only two days as don't work Thursday and Friday fortunately.
Well done Claire - thatโs great! That was only a couple of days after your 21k too wasnโt it? Make sure you take plenty of recovery time too. Sounds like you are doing very well with the plan. Iโve only managed a 30 min run since my 32k at the weekend. Hopefully get out tomorrow but it has been so hot so not felt like doing much at all! Good luck! ๐๐ป๐๐ป
Thank you, yeah it was fairly close but I knew I could run 21k lol. I need the reassurance of distance as well as stamina so I'm hoping to reach 30/32k for my longest run. But I'm a little behind with weeks so I'll just see how it goes. I need to get my brain to focus on pace not speed and believe it is ok to slow down so I finish! It is a tough old distance! I'm really glad this heat is cooling now. ๐ x
Yes, I know what you mean about reassurance of distance. It does take a long time though! ๐คฃ. At least it will hopefully feel a little easier on the day after taper and cooler weather ๐. Youโre doing great - itโs amazing to finish however long it takes! Thatโs what Iโve told myself anyway - it is far more relaxing and enjoyable too ๐ x
๐๐ It does! I think until I ran past 21k I was a little naive to how tough it is going to be. I have built up my endurance and stamina but actually experiencing the distance and realising I need to stay slow has probably helped me be able to run this now. And considering we have both ran long in awful hot conditions, October should be easier! ๐ค I was advised to use as little energy as possible when running and just find a slow steady rhythm. I'm going to treat this one as an experience and finish lol. And then hopefully if I get into London I can learn from this. It is amazing to finish though. 100% X
I think Iโll follow that slow steady rhythm Claire! ๐. I managed to get out for 10k today so that was a bit of a relief after the heat. Although short, I tried to stay at my target marathon pace which felt comfortable. Hope your training is going well this week ๐
How have you decided what your marathon pace will be? I'm thinking zone 3 but as that is based on my heartrate and my heartrate can be easily affected, especially nerves and adrenaline on race day! ๐๐
Good question! ๐ A bit of guesswork, but somewhere between my HM pace from most recent race, and my easy slow long run pace. I expect it to be to be easy buy with a slight bit of effort if you see what I mean?
Sounds about right to me. Thats where mine is (zone3). Hope your long run goes well - a shorter one for me this week of 2 hrs and then my longest one of the plan of 20-22miles next week all being well. ๐
