Anyone feel they help? And if so, during or after a run?

I only wear compression socks at runs, they are very comfortable, I did buy two pairs, I may wear the other pair when I go for longer walks during the winter months over my normal thinner socks, I l will see how that feels.

Do you find they help? I’m struggling with tired legs in the midst of all this training.

AlMorr profile image

Yes, they help, as for tiredness, have a few extra days off running, that way you should not feel so tired.

Yes currently having an extra day’s rest and only did the parkrun since Thursday but I may have to have more.

Do it, I will be surprised if you don't notice a difference 👍🏻

I love my compression socks post workout. I find they really help with recovery - feel great the next day. Haven’t worn them whilst running much.

Ok I’ll keep wearing mine thanks

Yes, I always wear them on longer runs as they just give that little bit extra support and in the areas I run, protection from scrub/nettles 🤣

I will occasionally put an even firmer pair on after a really tiring run (I certainly did after the 26.2) again just for the added support in recovery. 👍🏻

How long do you wear them for? I had them on for about 8 hours yesterday and my legs are still tired. I’ve just put them back on again. How do they help whilst running?

GoGo_JoJo profile image

Oh for post run only until bedtime which is probably only about 4 to 5 hrs.

I find they just help during a run to keep tiredness at bay.

Are you making sure you eat well post session? Or try a recovery drink after, I've tested with and without and they do help! You can get the "for goodness shake" brand in supermarkets to try before investing in a sports specific one.

Yes I always have a recovery drink after otherwise I have to write the whole day off! I’m trying protein shakes daily now and have started taking iron, magnesium and b6. I’ll try the socks next long run 👍🏽 Desperate times. Thank you.

Good luck!! 🤞🏻👍🏻

I have some and have worn them in post v long run and marathon recovery (in bed). Never used them whilst running. Have to say that I'm not a fan. Maybe they are too tight for me, but I just don't like the sensation etc.

I can’t decide 🤣 May as well try then I guess.

What's the difference between compression tights and compression socks? I think I wear compression tights... I don't know for sure though. 😂

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Marathon in reply to

Tights are like leggings

Socks are just long socks

Sleeves are just over your calf and don’t have feet in

in reply toTasha99

Do they all offer the same benefits though? Or are the socks tighter? 🤔

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Marathon in reply to

I would’ve thought the socks and sleeves were tighter than leggings but not sure

in reply toTasha99

Thanks. I only mention it because I hardly notice that i'm wearing my tights. I don't really know how much they help.

GoGo_JoJo profile image
GoGo_JoJoUltramarathon in reply toTasha99

Not necessarily tighter but the all in one compression from the feet up helps as out feet swell during long runs especially. If you just had tights you've got a stop point at the ankle. I've considered the sleeves but just can't be bothered with finding the right size and compression, whereas socks are really easy to find

Ah but I need to wear my injinji socks 🤣

GoGo_JoJo profile image

You could try the injinji liner socks under... sleeves for you in that case 👍🏻😁

Yes socks are probably the best for recovery and sleeves for running, as I can then wear my preferred running socks. Wearing sleeves when not running isn’t something I’d recommend. To prove it I flew in my compression sleeves last time and my feet swelled up just like 2 balloons. 😬

GoGo_JoJo profile image
GoGo_JoJoUltramarathon in reply toRunBrianRun

That's what puts me off the sleeves! Surely its better to have the all in one compression!

I used to wear them, but they were such a hassle to get on I quit after about a year. I honestly don't know if they help or not. I guess one way of finding out would be to wear just one and see if that leg felt better than the other after a good run.

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Marathon in reply toIrish-John

🤣 I’d look weird doing that 🤣

Irish-John profile image
Irish-JohnMarathon in reply toTasha99

I should do it then :)

God knows, it won't make me much more weirder looking than I am already! 😅😂🤣😭

Try it and let me know your findings 🕵🏻‍♂️

Irish-John profile image

You know what?

I will ! :)

I think a fair trial would be to do it on more than two runs. I'll alternate on the next six runs, starting Tuesday and report back :)

I wear compression socks on long runs (10+miles) and have definitely noticed a difference the day after with reduced leg fatigue. I have a few pairs but found it quite hard to get a pair I found comfortable to run in. I bought a pair of CEPs a few months ago (measured calves etc) but they were so tight they gave me calf pain during the run and I ended up rolling them down. Have never tried them the day after though. Try it and see.

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Marathon in reply toAldlib

I’m worried mine are too tight but I did measure my calf to get the right size. I guess I’ll just have to try. Thank you.

I use Karrimor long socks for my trail runs. They give protection from nettles, insects etc and offer some compression that provides some calf support for me anyway. I bought some compression sleeves but find them too tight around the ankle so prefer the socks.

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Marathon in reply toMacmac

Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind.

Shortly after I started running more than 5k I tweaked my right calf muscle badly enough to put me on the IC for a fortnight. Since then I've always worn compression socks for my longer runs, and for Parkruns if I'm hoping for a good time. No more tweaks, and significantly less post-run ache in my calves than previously. So I'm a convert. Never considered just wearing them after a run - in fact I usually roll them down to get rid of the support as soon as I finish. I've got Karrimors (cheap and longer) and Hillys (not cheap and shorter) and prefer the Karrimors (but them I'm biased because they were an Accrington company originally).

Great thank you! I’ll have to try them 👍🏽

I have some calf sleeves from decathlon. I like them. I use them in bed sometimes if I'm feeling fatigue in my calves. I had the socks but wrecked them in a tumble dryer 😥

I’ve worn them post tendinitis and feel they’ve helped but now I’m upping the distance I’ve been getting blisters on long runs. I’ve switched to runderwear anti blister socks (which I love) & am now looking into calf sleeves.

Update - hated them! Stopped after 3 miles to take them off - made my legs feel even worse!

👎🏼👎🏼 what put you off? Too restrictive? Maybe they're too tight...

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Marathon in reply toGoGo_JoJo

I’ve measured and bought accordingly. Felt they made my legs feel tight which is the opposite of what I need.

GoGo_JoJo profile image
GoGo_JoJoUltramarathon in reply toTasha99

Definitely. Mine are only fairly light compression, not noticeable really, just creates a supported feeling, not constricting.

Tasha99 profile image

Plus they made me hot! 🤣

GoGo_JoJo profile image

🤣🤣🤣 that's mostly in the mind. I'd rather have that than tired legs or stung by nettles etc
