As is customary here, these are my new running socks. Just plain old boring black I'm afraid, and low profile which I think we a mistake because I'm sure I decided to go with the ankle ones. Nevermind.
Took them out for a spin on a 5K speed run tonight, and they felt great. I'm a bit concerned they might be a little too small because they do feel a little snug on my toes, not enough to annoy me, but certainly enough to notice. Are all running socks as thick as these, or is it because they're double layered antiblister? I hope this doesn't make them too hot in the summer.
As for the run, it felt good, but I still haven't got a clue what I'm doing when it comes to speed intervals. I can up the pace and I can reduce the pace, but what I can't do is work out if I'm going faster or slower than an earlier interval or even if I could maintain this pace for 1mile, 5K or even 10K - I'm just running. It would also seem I am not very good at planning speed routes. How am I meant to run my fastest pace on the steepest uphill climb? 🙈
Anyway, I got round all 5000m, so that's the main thing. Couple of rest days then Park Run, then it's that fun time of juggling runs around my nightshifts.

Runderwear socks are particularly thick. Hilly twinskins are a bit thinner. You'll probably find them too hot in summer, but that still feels a long way off so plenty of wear to be had before then 🙁

I like the low profile socks, and I like the nib on yours at the back of the heel. I mostly wear Hilly mono skins all year round, but the low profile ones in summer and the ankle ones in winter to cover any gap at the bottom of my leggings (I’m a chilly person!)
With the size, they do shrink over time, even on a cool wash, so I stretch mine out a bit while damp.
I learned about speed control with half marathon training over the summer. It was heart rate based, so if I exceeded or didn’t reach the current zone, my watch beeped and buzzed. That’s easier than puzzling if you’re hitting or maintaining a certain pace.
Keep a running diary and use your data. After the run, get on Strava and note down how you felt during each interval. Look at the data from the run and you should be able to see where your pace picked up during each fast interval, and slowed for the slow ones. Estimate your pace for each interval from the data. Map the feelings to the paces, and next intervals session try to run each interval at a pace that feels a similar effort.
Would you put any faith in the Grade Adjusted Pace on strava roseabi ? My first two intervals today were slightly downhill. The GAP did seem to bring the intervals closer together. That was enough for me to turn away and tell myself I'm in control. I know what I'm doing after all. Yeah! Right! Just lucky more like 🙄😂
Things like pedestrians and roadworks and cars immediately come to mind - one of my intervals popped up in the middle of the high st - I'd done no planning at all 🤣
Sounds to me like you are doing all the right things! As for your socks.... thicker socks can cause rubbing. I bought a super duper expensive pair for my Exmoor marathon, and I ended up losing 2 toenails as they squashed my feet. Lesson learnt, I stick to more mile and other cheap simple brands.
I always stretch my socks out a bit at the toe before I put my shoes on to give them a bit more wriggle room. But yes, I’ve noticed nearly all my socks look tiny when I take them out of the washing machine but as Hidden says, I stretch mine out too when they’re damp. The only ones that haven’t shrunk are my Hilly ones.
I wear different socks in the summer than I do in the winter. They’re thicker in winter and in summer I tend to wear single layer. I once wore a pair of ordinary everyday socks (long story 🙄) and they were fine but it was only a short run so no harm done.
Re your intervals, I don’t do them as such but I do a 5K and try to run each K faster than the previous one. It’s working for me because you have a longer period to work out your pace and it’s easy to see how your pace has improved.
