Chickened out yet again!!

This is a non-runnpost.☹️. I have no idea how you lot are still doing it and I take my hats off to you. I think I could manage to run if I could only sleep!!! I’ve been going to bed earlier so I can get up earlier, to run when it’s cool. But the alarm goes off and I am aching head to toe and absolutely knackered. I last ran on Monday and that was a struggle and I know it’s not a long time but I usually go alternate days.

I just am barely sleeping. I thought I’d sleep Monday after running 6k in the morning and then walking quite a bit AND clearing loads of overgrown jasmine in my back garden in the evening too. But no, I was awake most of the night on and off, far too hot.

Tuesday I ended up cat napping about 3.00 in the afternoon, but only for about 30 mins so that shouldn’t have affected me too much. I walked a fair bit and helped my son chop ivy into small enough pieces to bag up for about an hour in the evening. Still baking hot about 8.00pm when we finished half of it and gave up and I had to have another shower before bed. I did several relaxation exercises before bed too but still could not drop off for ages. And then woke intermittently all night. I have been making sure I drink plenty of water too so that doesn’t help as I have to get up for the loo then too. 🤣

I set the alarm for 5.30 yesterday morning but felt like a zombie so turned it off and slept till 9.00. “never mind “I thought,” I’ll have a nice relaxing day and sleep tonight and run Thursday” ....... so as it was slightly cooler yesterday I ended up ripping out the other half of my jasmine, from the other side of the garden. Gonna have to weed killer it I think, as it’s taken over the whole garden and barely even flowering just loads of leaves. Anyway I’d finished that at about 5, had my tea and early night again. And even worse nights sleep. I don’t think I had a solid block of more than 20 mins all night. My legs were aching and my ribs ache too( prob need a run) and I was so hot!!! Both windows open, bedroom and bathroom door propped open , bathroom windows open... still no draught. I even got one of my cool towels but that just got uncomfortable. So again the alarm went off at 6, all my gear was ready.... I wasn’t. Aching so much I could barely stumble downstairs and put the recycling out.

Any advice or just wait the heat out? I don’t remember being this bad last year and it was just as hot then wasn’t it? And I was a newer runner too.

Hi, I’ve also given up this week, too hot for me. Will get back to it next week. I saw that someone else was using the time to go swimming, sounds like a good alternative!

That IS a good idea. Unfortunately it’s school hols so crowded pools but maybe evening swim.....

I’m going to pump up my bike tyres too and maybe go for a gentle ride along my running track. I bought myself one of the old fashioned looking bikes a couple of years ago, that sits up nicely and has a basket. Very comfortable to ride unlike the mountain bike I had for years which hurt my wrists and shoulders due to leaning forward.

I'm finding cycling very pleasant despite the temps. I've been going about 4pm so it's not cool, but sometimes there's shade, other times a lovely breeze as you whoosh downhill. It was pretty horrid when I stopped yesterday though. Straight in the shower!

The advantage of the bike is you create air. I’ve just crossed paris and it’s 43C here. Even walking is a bit much

linda9389 profile image

and it's a big advantage! 43C sounds brutal - take care

You just have to listen to your body, if it's not up for it, then don't try. A walk, a ride or swim will have to do for now. 👍🏻😁

As someone once said the run will be waiting for you when you go back out there

I don't like running in the hotter weather, I much prefer Winter, Autumn or Spring. I keep the mileage down but try to keep to regular x3 runs a week. I have total respect for those training for HM or marathons at this time of year, but not for me.

I have trouble sleeping in the hot weather too, but I find running helps with this. I run early, before work around 5-5.30 am to make sure I take advantage of the cooler air and the extended daylight.

Thats said, do what works for you. The heat doesn't last that long and even the wamrest summer will allow for a few odd cooler days in between. Taking a few weeks away form running every year I find doesn't hinder progress and even makes my overall running better as a result.

I wanted to do an April marathon with winter training as I prefer cold weather running but my friend insisted on October marathon with summer training as she hates winter running. Now she’s bloody dropped out and I’m left summer training 🥵

Ooo Awkward. Looks like she'll have to do a Spring one with you to compensate 😂😂

And she’s still your friend...? I much prefer winter running. Bug if you e trained in the hot weather you’ll be flying come winter. You could do another one in April and improve your time.

Luckily looks like this heat will not last. I too have curtailed my October marathon training over the last week. 13mile runs have become 10k only and I have only done one of those this week... A few days off is not going to matter in the long term and probably give us a chance to recover. I’ll pick up my plan again at the weekend as Sunday looks ok. I like your suggestion of an April marathon too 😉

Well, I prefer summer running, but even I am finding it harder than normal. I manage by taking water with electrolytes and keeping my head covered. You can’t expect to run at your normal pace in the heat. I think the humidity is the real problem. And lack of sleep is awful. My sleep is very intermittent right now as well. If you are finding it hard, opting out till it’s cooler is the sensible option. The runs will still be there, and sometimes a break does you good.

No way I'm running in this heat. I'm lucky as I live by the sea, so I can go for a swim. Maybe you could find a pay as u go gym and hit the dread mill, some where with air con ?

limberlou profile image

I bought myself a dreadmill for the icy weather and it’s in the garage but it’s like an oven in there. Might be an idea to go to an air conditioned gym...

My last run was Saturday. I wasn’t well Monday so I skipped my run and haven’t been out since because of the heat. Should have gone with local running club this morning but too hot. So I’ve switched to walking early in the day and using my spin bike. I’ve missed the running but it will be ok Saturday and I will be better for a rest. The runs will wait and it’s more important to listen to your body. Maybe all the gardening took its toll. Hope you feel better soon. 🏃🏻‍♀️😊

You are not alone in skipping the runs - I too, am sweltering in Surrey and haven't run since Sunday. Tomorrow looks cooler however.

Wait the heat out. That's what I've done. I've enjoyed the pub beer garden visits in the sunny evenings 😎🤣

Time to crack back on now. Today is nice and cool....😎

I haven’t been since last Friday either. I have had a friend staying, but even if I hadn’t, I’m not sure I would have gone. Warmth is one thing but these last few days have been furnace like. Parkrun tomorrow though as it is looking much cooler and unsettled. Hurrah 😁
