Switching to miles

Can I pick your brains please? Up until now I’ve been running in km units on Strava but switched to miles this week, as I’m starting my HM programme nice and early (it’s not til October but I’ll probably repeat quite a few weeks as the long run increases to make sure my knees are ok). Did those of you who have done HMs make this switch? I’m struggling with not having the feedback as often in terms of pace and distance- didn’t realise how much I’ve come to rely on tech!! Is it something you get used to? xx

I think it's down to the individual. I've always worked in miles and struggle with when others discuss pace in terms of kms.

I don't think you need to switch really, probably best to stick with what you know best. 🤔

I’m up to 15 miles and still haven’t switched as I understand the ks pace. However I keep having to google how many ks there are in different mile lengths so that I ensure I run the distance and don’t accidentally do say 12.999 miles! My friend use miles so I’m starting to get used to that as keep having to convert so we both run the same pace 😂

I have continued in kms from W1R1 to half marathon.

The first time it was a potential issue was at the GSR which is 10 miles, but they also had 5 and 10k and '1k to go' markers. I pretty much ignored the mile markers and used the km stats from my watch.

I have only run one half marathon and did all the training and calculations in kms. Then pretty much the night before, I decided to make myself a pace band in miles; I just put on it the time I hoped to hit each mile marker if I were to make my target time at my planned paces. I left my watch with pace and distance and laps in kms. It worked a treat! I didn't have to have any doubts on the GPS, I didn't spend time doing km to miles conversions in my head throughout; I just checked my wrist pace band at each mile marker to see if I was hitting my target time, but I also had the comfort of each half km ticked off with a buzz from my watch together with a display of the mins/km pace if I wanted it. Unlike the GSR, there were only mile markers in the half marathon I did, nothing in kms.

I don't think there is any reason why you should have to convert to miles if you are happy with kilometers. Good luck :)

On most running watches you can set them to report a lap time, so even if you are using miles you could still set a 1km lap time (set lap to 1094 yards) ? Your lap time is then the same as your pace - min/km.

being old school I have my garmin set to miles all the time can't think in Ks I certainly found it helpful to convert when following HM plan but look on strava to compare how I'm doing 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️
