Hi as you all know I am doing the Brighton Marathon in April on the 14th. I am excited but also nervous. If anyone has done this as their first marathon any experiences and information would be useful. How do you stop yourself from getting dragged along by the atmosphere and going too fast at the beginning. I went off too fast at Cardiff Half because by mile 6.5 miles my feet and legs ached but realise with hindsight that my trainers obviously needed changing.

Hi! I have run the Brighton Marathon twice, although never as my first marathon. Below is a link to my report of the first time I did it (the report of the second one doesn't really have any useful info in it!). Feel free to ask me questions xx
I confess I am not very good at stopping myself from going off too fast! If there is a pacer for your sort of finishing time you could stay with them, and if you have a running watch you could perhaps set it to buzz you if you are running too fast?
The atmosphere is amazing at Brighton Marathon, so good luck 😊😊😊

Hi roseabi thanks for your reply. Sometime last year I did 8miles at a 17:30 minute miles with a friend. At the time I thought that the cut off time for Brighton Marathon was 6.5hrs but they have confirmed that there is no cut off time. She worked out that at that pace I would only reach 22 miles in 6hrs 23 meaning I would have 7mins to do 4.2miles to finish. Obviously this is not the case now and I am lot quicker than I was then but I am hoping to do it just over 6.5hrs but mainly just want to finish.
I don't know what pacers will be available - you should be given that info in the final instructions. It would be best to plan to be really strict with yourself when you start, make sure you are running at a really comfortable pace and slow down if you aren't.
Yes, Brighton wait until everyone has passed the finish line - they are so lovely!!!
