The run that nearly wasn't to be... first trail and first hills.

Gary the Gremlin pulled out his pompoms and started to gyrate across his living room, belly hanging over his Y-fronts as he crowed, 'Thank you, Albal! No running today!'

Kiddo and I were staring glumly at Albal, our aluminium foil-coloured car, as she wheezed and refused to roar into life. We were an hour's drive away from our first trail event, and unlike Albal and Gary, we were raring to go.

Our lovely 89-year-old neighbour came out, and dug through the piles of junk in his garden before solemnly handing over a car battery and jump leads to me. "It's new," he said. "You should be able to start the car with that".

It did! I leapt with joy and kissed Yves noisily on both cheeks, then we all jumped into the car and set off for Caveirac. Caveirac is not far from Nimes, and has a very classy castle, whence ( or "from where", if you prefer) the 1061 nutters in trainers were to set off in hot pursuit of enlightenment, runner's highs and PBs.

Kiddo was looking forward to the event - he trains on hilly, difficult terrain so this was going to be right up his street. In my case, I would be happy just to finish the 10.2 km race - even if it meant coming in last - without going arse over tit or having to walk. I had signed up in a frenzy of enthusiasm and self-confidence, then Gary the Gremlin had silently pointed at the altitude graph, made a motion of slitting his throat with his TV remote, and bitten triumphantly into a doughnut. He was right: there was 7km of climbing 110m up a hill on gravelly, unstable tracks, then 3k back down. My fall last week had done nothing to reassure me. And the very cold temperatures while we were waiting were not any help, either.

Once we were off, everything felt better. Kiddo disappeared in a puff of teenaged testosterone, and left me to my own devices. The climb was very long, and a lot of people were doing a walk/run to make their way up to the top. Apparently the views along the way were fabulous, but I was too busy keeping an eye on where I put my feet and on other runners who pulled out to overtake without looking behind them first to see much of it. While I'm on the subject, the lady who was running with her hands on her hips was a right pain in the bum.

Gary buckled his seat belt and got his sick bucket ready when we settled into a good pace around km 4, and we made it to the finishing line without a hitch. Unfortunately I didn't have my Garmin with me (in all the panic, it was forgotten on the kitchen table), but I loved the run.

Kiddo finished in 50 mins 50 seconds, and I bowled over the finishing line at 1h 11mins and 37 seconds - the last runner came in at 1h31 mins, and I bet she was as proud of herself as I was.

Lesson learned: get more hills into my training. There was something a little masochistically fun about the challenge. Gary, needless to say, does not approve....

Excellent Mfam! Well done you, a great time too......love the tag....😂....and how on earth does someone run with their hands planted on their hips without falling over.......🤔

Cheers Madge :) I have no idea, but she was sticking her elbows into everyone's ribs. Then there were the ones who ran in front of their friends, kept turning around to talk to them, and bumping into other people in the process. And the running couples, too. Agggg.

Glad you made it! The plus side of "hands on hips" type runners is it does make me speed up to get away from them.

That's what I did, but not as fast as I would have liked...

Great stuff, mfam.

Sounds like a tough ol' route and you should be dead chuffed.

mfamilias profile image
mfamiliasHalf Marathon in reply to Dunder2004

Hey up, Mr D! How are you? It was pretty tough for me, but the first in did it in just over half an hour... That'll teach me to ignore uphill portions in my training :) I'm proud of myself though.

I am fine, mfam. In terms of running, I am taking baby steps to get back into the swing of things.

Hills are always going to tough and you would have to be bonkers to 'enjoy' them but they do help a lot with building stamina. Including them once every couple of weeks in your training would be a good 'investment'.

I'm glad you're easing back into running. Today I'm discovering new muscles that hurt. That means that hill running is definitely a necessary factor in future training.

Fantastic run mfam, sounds terrific and jolly well done, great time.

I have decided my local Parkrun is now my friend, it is very hilly, pr tourists always hate it! But I have decided it is perfect for hill training!

mfamilias profile image
mfamiliasHalf Marathon in reply to Millsie-J

You are very wise to do so - if you can run hills, then flats are a doddle, but it doesn't work the other way round. Here its flat as a pancake, except for one nasty hill that I have stoically ignored.

Great writeup Sweetie - you just need to attach a picture of your medal, because you must have got one after such an epic race. Can't imagine anyone could run with their hands on their hips, unless their capris were falling down! Hope those muscle are feeling better tomorrow xx

This is France, no medal. I was given a pair of running gloves though, which will come in handy as I appear to have lost my Gore ones between the finishing line and the car :(

AncientMum profile image
AncientMumHalf Marathon in reply to mfamilias

No medal? NO MEDAL!?! What are they thinking of? Mind you, running gloves are definitely a good prize. I've lost one of mine too *sad face, cold fingers* x

mfamilias profile image
mfamiliasHalf Marathon in reply to AncientMum

The French only do medals for marathons, and sometimes for half marathons (the one I'm doing in June doesn't do medals for HMs this year, sob). I only have two bits of bling to show for a year of running events, and only one is French. I have a drawer full of kit bags and free T shirts though, so I can't complain.

Well done mfam for an epic run!😊

Ps I can make you a medal if you want, made on for misswobble for her 1st HM! It's an occasion to be celebrated!!! 😊😆

They do give you a T-shirt and a bottle of wine and there are masseurs too. But I am so bling-deprived now that I'd happily swap those for a medal. :(

mcgurranhouse profile image

I once did a RunHer event in Belfast because it was for females only and it was to be a medal my husband couldn't get - only to discover too late that there were no medals only T-shirts! On the plus side at least you are running in France!!! :)

Love the write up! Good for your neighbour who saved the day. Sounds like a good run (in the end!) and great times for you and Kiddo.

mfamilias profile image
mfamiliasHalf Marathon in reply to Eatcakeandrun

My neighbour is a darling. He's pretty eccentric, so a lot of people in the village gossip about him, but they haven't bothered talking to him to see how wrong they are, and he couldn't give a toss what they think, which makes him my kind of neighbour ;)

The run was fab, I'm still grinning. And aching in places I've never ached before.

Thanks, Pops. Gary stopped throwing up from the effects of the rocky ride last night, he's sulking. I told him that it was my equivalent of giving him a ticket for a roller coaster, but he's not convinced.

Wow, what a run and what a race report. Be proud of yourself, and reassure Gary that it's ok for him to have sex and travel.

mfamilias profile image
mfamiliasHalf Marathon in reply to Tomas

Gary unfortunately has not idea what either are: like most Gremlins, he hasn't been arsed to meet a Gremlin girl or pack a suitcase yet. And he is now dependent on his host, until he has completed his mission to make me give up. I think he has Stockholm syndrome now.

Fantastic post and I love the tag ( where did that come from?!!!)... you and kiddo did so well it sounds tough. I do a fair amount of hills and they never get any easier do they?!!

mfamilias profile image

The tag maybe came from the "puff of teenaged testosterone"? I will tell you if it gets any better - it was my first hill run in two years 😂

Gary is inimitable. He says he models himself on Dominique Strauss-Kahn, but he draws the line at leopard-print g-strings under his dressing gown.

Sounds great, well done for getting up that hill and stuff.

I think i am far to Innocent (and confused) to read all about these sex hormone and g-string stuff.

Thanks, Benwill. Gary says that if you have run a Marathon, you can cope with his hormone problems and choice of underwear with no problems whatsoever.

I was very chuffed with my time, too. I discovered the 'compare' button on Myasics yesterday, and wished I hadn't. I'll be avoiding it in the future - other women my age would leave me rolling in the dust in their wake, apparently... :)
