on the 5th round of injections and again a lot of pain but only in the right eye not the left. The pain went on for 10 hours and codeine didn’t really make it better. Also both eyes were so soar l could not open either of them when l tried to tell the doctor he dismissed my pain saying “ it happens”
Not sure how to progress and am now terrified of the next set of injections
I am sorry to read this. I feel a bit of pain in my left eye when I have injections but it really doesn’t last for long( like any injection).
I have to say I prefer it when the nurses do the injections rather than the doctors especially if they are male doctors. Do you ask for plenty of anaesthetising drops. One male doctor squirted the iodine into my eye rather than dabbing it and that was painful. Do they wash your eye out properly after.
I use drops for dry eyes and use those after my injections
I am so sorry to hear you have had so much pain after your injection. My husband and I have both had several injections and although the eyes are a bit gritty and sore we have never experienced real pain. We have our treatment at the local hospital and are always told to ring them if we have any problems, how awful that your doctor appears to be so uncaring.
Painful eye
Hi I'm not sure whether I have written on here about my eye pain, sorry if I have, but if not I will. I too suffer from extreme pain after my injection but only in one eye, my other eye is just abit sore, but nothing like my left eye, at my November appt, I told the injection about the pain, and once again they blame the iodine, anyway thinking this she absolutely drenched my eye, I was soaked, an hour later the pain started, nothing I did was any help at all, I wanted to throw myself under a train, (not sure if they were on strike though) sorry could not resist, anyway, I now dread going to the hospital, I will be telling them again. After I had injection in my left eye, my eye was sore for a week everytime I blinked or looked down. Dr. Said to use eye drops several times a day. It's finally starting to feel better.
my Retina Specialist said to use preservative free drops every waking hour for two days. I think that’s better than a couple times a day. But I have dry eyes to start with.

Do you get anaesthetic drops to take away and use at home? I get those, and I don't always need them but when I do - well you have my sympathy. You could try asking for them?
Sometimes I know right away that there will be pain. I'm wondering if my eye clinic has has had a change in brand of retractor - as I have gotten a scratched eye at insertion! After 3 years of injections, only last 3 have had scratches from the instrument. Same doctor doing it. Linda
I am so sorry for your suffering. I had great pain after injections despite lots of washing out and anaesthetic drops. The culprit was iodine. Although my consultant wouldn't switch to an alternative, he agreed to dilute the iodine and mercifully this worked. Please try asking your consultant to dilute the iodine or switch to an alternative. Wishing you the best. Let us know how you get on xx
Hi Agustri77. I get problems with iodine too. I have a moan about it at every appointment and last but one injection, it was decided not to use it in my eye but use an alternative. It was brilliant, I came out of there without any soreness at all and the next day, it didn't even feel like I'd had an injection. However, at my next injection last Friday, my consultant was the injector and she always insists on putting iodine in my eye, regardless of any discomfort I tell her about. Fortunately, she did flush it out really well afterwards and I had very little discomfort but the shame is, it isn't always like that and just when you think things have improved, it happens all over again at the next injection!!!! I often wonder how these injectors would react if they had to go through the same treatments they give to us!!

Some people are sensitive to the iodine wash and I’m sensitive to both iodine and chlorahexadrine wash . I have a very clear regime:
I have my eye washed with saline solution.
Then a dab of iodine on the inject site
After the injection my eye is washed out with saline
Then I end the treatment with xailin eye drops which the clinic supplies and keeps my eye lubricated.
After the injection I keep my eye closed for a while. This is to prevent my giving myself an abrasion when blinking.
The main problem is that I never have the same injector and so have to explain this process every time even though my eye consultant has recommended it. I’m afraid you have to be the expert patient and ask them to help you avoid such discomfort. Good luck.
I have the same problem. Now have alternative to iodine. Injectors resist using it because iodine is more effective against infection so Alternatives need sterile space such as required for operations so can’t get through patients so quickly. I have NO burning etc after the jags now which used to go on for hours. Agree that constantly changing injectors makes things dry difficult. It’s very hard but just need to keep speaking up.
