Hello. I’ve had dry AMD diagnosed for around 9 years now, and during the last two ears have had a lot of discomfort , occasionally pain, in my left eye. I feel this especially when lying down. I,ve been seen by an ophthalmologist and GP, neither of which have been able to help. I’ve been prescribe lubricants, which I use , but they don’t seem to help. My sight is worse in the other eye so there doesn’t seem to be a link there.
Does anyone else have this and if so, can they suggest anything to help.m

Yes, I should really. Thank you for encouraging this. I guess being newly diagnosed, I wondered if I was being hypersensitive and should wait until my next appointment to raise questions.
Bradders, I hope we both get to understand why there is this discomfort. One thing I suspect is an sinuses - perhaps the injection irritates them? However, it doesn't sound like you have injections.
Hi Bradders53. I would go back to the GP and ask if he/she could send you for a second opinion. I have wet amd so I can't really advise you other than that. You could always ring the Macular Society helpline and ask advice from them:
Thanks for all the replies. Because I have dry at least I can rule out reaction to injections. I should try the helpline really. Because I’ve been to the hospital clinic and GP I just kind of assumed it was part of 5e AMD deal and I had to put up with it, but it’s a bit wearing.
I contacted my eye clinic earlier, and they just got back.
There is no explanation for why my eyes ache and throb. They are satisfied that it's not related to the Eyelea injection.
Back to square one! Do you take any supplements at all? I am currently taking several each day, which two months ago I'd never heard about or considered.
I am now wondering if any of these trigger the ache - which feels also feels tight and dry at times:
Zeaxanthin; Meso-zeaxanthin; Lutein.
CoQ10
Bilberry tincture
Cod liver oil with Vit D
Pro-biotic
And every other day:
Hema-plex
Vit A
It's a mystery! I wish there was more research available.
Hi. I did take Macushield Gold but it upset my stomach, so now I just eat a large portion of broccoli, kale or similar green veg every day.
Take a lot of meds for other reasons anyway so I don’t really use supplements.
I randomly get an ache around the orbit of my injected eye. It doesn't last more than an hour or so. I massage the orbit and up side of nose onto forehead where the nerve lies. Asked my clinic about it and they said not to worry but always get any pain checked out.

I suffer from: My left eye is "Dry" the right eye is "Wet".
The right eye I have injection every 28 days and the sight is great.
The left eye that is dry I don't have any treatment other than "OPTIVE" drops that have Dual Action Lubricating and Osmoprotective Comfort Solution . I use it three times
a day three drops in my left eye every time.
The last drops to put in is before bed time. This works for me. I don't have any discomfort
or pain or any other condition. I do keep my three time a day drops. I also use in both
my eyes the same Optive drops. The Optive drops do not have alcohol in the solution.
You can buy this "Optive " drops over the counter. but I have mine prescribed by my GP.
I have been using this product for the last ten years my dry eye has remained visually good.
I suggest you see your GP and ask for a prescription and see how you get on.
For lubrication I get carbomer gel and VitaPos on prescription and I use Systane in the daytime when I don’t want anything sticky .
I may go back to a GP ( we never see the same one twice) but I did have several scans and saw an ophthalmologist about this two years ago. The doctors are happy that there’s nothing that they call “sinister”.
I have another scan coming up soon as part of the OKKO project so that might be a good starting point.
Hi, I've had dry AMD for about 4 years. I do not need injections, and the conditions appears t o be stable. I could not see anything if I had to rely on my left eye, which is badly affected, but the right eye is still o.k. I too have continuous discomfort in my left eye. Not badly enough to say it is really painful. What I found that really helps are hot compresses. So I put hot compresses, made with boiled water and make up remover pads, so no danger of infections, on my eyes every morning. But you could do this anytime you feel the need.
