macular oedema and cataracts

I am so pleased that I saw a consultant who wanted my sight to improve not be stable.

She offered me Ozurdex and said it could give me cataracts. I said to her that I am on long term steroids for my polymyalgia rheumatica. She looked at my cataracts, said they were moderate but would refer me to the cataract clinic.

2 weeks later I got a pre op assessment and am on the list for cataract removal to be done in about 2 to 3 months. I had thought my eyesight was worsening due to the oedema but am so pleased to know that my sight will improve in a few months time.

I don’t know why but I had thought that cataracts would not be operated on if you have macular oedema.

I am so happy that I saw someone who is happy to look at other things to help. When I see the “members of the team” they just go along with injections and tell me I do not control my diabetes, Which annoys me as my hba1c is 36 and I have been in remission for 5 years, There is light at the end of the tunnel!

I'm really pleased for you Koalajane. I have wet AMD in my left eye and I also had a cataract in the same eye. I was told it was really bad, so bad they couldn't see the macula on the OCT scans. Last July I was told that I had been put forward for the op and had my pre-op in August. I was still waiting in April this year to be contacted. My consultant told me to ring the appointments and ask if they had forgotten me. I did this and had the op a few weeks later. The change was unbelievable. I thought the majority of my vision loss was the wet AMD but it was actually the cataract. It has made such a difference to my vision.

Two - three months will fly by and you'll be cataract free in no time. All the best with it. x
