I am on anticoagulant for Afib, I just had a 2nd injection for wet macular degeneration. I am concerned about how safe I am with taking these two drugs? Please let me know your thoughts as I am worried!

Hi Slattery. Have you discussed this with your ophthalmologist - he/she should be able to advise you and hopefully put your mind at rest. I assume they know you're on an anticoagulant and if so, I'm sure they would have advised you on the matter if there was likely to be a problem.

I’ve had quite a few injections for my wet macular and they have a list of my various medications, each time I go they ask me if any changes in my meds since my last visit. I always tell them if I take anything different or stop any so that they can keep me up to date. I was worried a few months ago because my usual eye gel couldn’t be obtained by the pharmacy so they gave me a substitute one. After an injection you have to open a new sterile tube but the new alternative one burned when I put it in which doesn’t happen with my usual one. I did have a new tube of my usual one I so used that. I mentioned it to the hospital and was told the alternative gel had a preservative in it that caused the burning feeling . It’s good to check that you have a record of your meds at the hospital.

Dear Slattery.

It is important that you discuss any concerns with both your ophthalmologist and the prescribing medical professional. It is extremely important that you do not initiate ceasing to take the anticoagulants. There would have been a good reason for you being placed on them.

Medical professionals have to weigh up the relative risks and benefits of any treatment.

Kind regards,

before starting injections I had to state what medication I was on so they could check it was what my records were already saying.

Do ask there ophthalmologist next time you visit.
