I haven’t worn contact lenses or worn eye makeup since being diagnose with wet AMD in both eyes so was wondering how most ladies on Macular feel about this, as I would like to try getting dolled up again on special occasions, i do however wear my lipstick!
Love to all

Hi again Ann. I haven't worn eye makeup for many years anyway so I never think about it. If you feel that it's what you want to do, go for it as I don't see that it would interfere with the macula but of course I could be wrong. I'm sure others will be along to give you their views. All the best. xx
Thanks for your reply, it doesn’t really bother me too much as I see love my red lipstick but I used to wear contact lenses a lot, I did read somewhere the lenses sometime give a better sight so may try them.Love Ann x
Good morning Annsandra13. I have AMD and have always worn eye make up. The only day I don’t is injection day. I would feel I was letting myself go if I didn’t shower and make up my face and style my hair every day. I have never used contact lenses.Have a good day.x
Hi RP1944Well you are right it’s time to brighten myself up more, although in some way I have felt liberated to not wear make up, but I miss the glamorous feeling associated. Thanks for your inspiration.
Hi Caragg29, It is so kind f you to let me know about contact lense wear, I will try mine again this weekend, it seems quite fashionable nowadays for males to wear eye makeup😜 hoping all is well with you!Kind regards
Actually thinking about it, it’s prob 3 days after injection as I have to use antibiotic drops for a few days. So don’t rush things, but certainly there are no probs with lens wearing.I did wonder whether I was being sexist with the eye makeup comment and realise some guys did in fact use it; but at 68 I feel it’s a bit late for me to experiment 😄
Hello Annsandra13, I have had wet AMD in one eye for quite some time, the only time i don't wear eye make up is on the day of the injection and for a few days after, to avoid the risk of infection, otherwise I always wear it, have always thought it an essential part of my make up. Best wishes.
Thanks for your message, well I’m getting back to using eye make up I still style my hair and love my lipstick, will follow your lead.!So kind to respond I hope you are progressing well.Love Ann x
Hi Penelopeflower, Thank you for your response, it’s high time I followed your lead! I stopped following a frightening time when I developed Endophthalmitis following an injection. I am less anxious now after a year. I hope you are doing ok with your treatment.
Thank you Annsandra13, I am doing well, the injections have helped my vision considerably, and the time between injections has been extended, so that is good. Could not do without my eye make up and as long as you are careful, it is allowed. Good luck with everything. x
That is great news to hear that your eyes are responding to the injections so well. Do you use a preservative free brand, I’ve been thinking of buying from body shop. Ned a good mascara ! Stay well and thanks for responding xx
No Annsandra13, I just use my normal high street brands, but the body shop is as good as any, I wouldn't put eye liner on your bottom lashline, but apart from that I use everything, vanity but there we are. Good luck. x
Hello Annsandra. How interesting to know that you too had endophthalmitis; I had it too and spent a few days in hospital followed by weeks of dosing myself with lots of prescribed medicine. That was followed by a cataract operation, which helped my vision a fair bit. As to eye makeup, because of my age (89) I look a bit awful without it so I use eyeshadow but try not to use liner on the lower lid, or mascara, just in case. I try to do what I can to make the best of things - good for the soul! Keep smiling.
Hi Beldie, how lovely t receive your reply, well I don’t need to tell you how devastating Endophthalmitis is and how frightening it is that we could contract in again when going for injections. However I’m over the experience, I am going to start wearing more that my red lipstick although a little wasted under the mask!I have. Been wondering about cataract but they wouldn’t consider it for now. Yes let’s all keep smiling and thank you.
I wouldn't have either if you don't miss them! I think it's likely make up and contact lenses can allow more bacteria to flourish - if you do miss them I would stop for a few days either side of your injection!!
Hi rosyG of course I agree that all precautions must be taken to prevent infection, that is so important and i make sure that no makeup is applied before and after injections, but as someone who has always worn make up I think it is important to also retain as much as possible what you normally do, macular degeneration is a very nasty ailment, but it should not necessarily define ones lifestyle. With sensible precautions it can be managed.
I think it reflects my fear iof endophthalmitis and I act accordingly. There is no correct answer to this as I don’t think there have been any randomised studies on how make up on eyes affects bacterial count etc. Best to avoid near injection time to be on safe side I think
Hi RosyG ,Yes you are right absolutely, I will be most cautious thank you , once is enough I am so fortunate to recover my sight would not like to see any f my friends on Macular having this awful infection that gets trapped at the back of they eye . Sending love and thanks
I have the same problem but I still wear mascara everyday and add eyeshadow when going out to a special occasion..its not any problem at all or doesn't interfere with my eye problem 🙃 so go for it
Hi Susiehun, thank you for your message, it is nice to feel glam and make an effort, I will bush up my makeup skills. I hope you are keeping well.Kind regards
I wear eye makeup most days (though not so much during lockdown!) except for the day before and two or three days after an injection, keeping it all as clean as possible. Cleansing is important, and I use hot water compresses on closed eyelids to make sure all makeup has melted off completely. I also make sure to wash any brushes or mascara wands at least once a week, with a little soap and hot water. Just don't poke any in your eye by mistake!
Hi EliviraKate,Thank you for some excellent course with dodgy eyesight it is quite easy to poke the eye also to put makeup on, I used to wear contact lenses and so it was great to apply makeup. Well I will have to get my act together.
The hot water compresses sound a good idea, although it is not recommended t use tap water for 4/5 days after injection.
I am a researcher in water technologies so not a fan of tap water with so many contaminants and toxins entering our water sources.
As other users said, it's okay to use makeup. I like to keep my eyes clean two days before and after the injection as a precautionary measure. I wouldn't want any bacteria to be introduced by mistake, I have enough problems with my eyes.
Also, I didn't use my contacts for some time, but I wanna wear them again. I found a website where they have colored prescription lenses, called myeyebb.com. I wanna try them. Why not give my eyes a little bit of color?
Btw, do you wear contacts? If yes, do you have any recommendations? I'm curious to try different types.
When choosing shades of shadows, be sure to consider the color of your eyes. Green eyes will be expressed by red, copper, or violet shades; blue-eyed girls will do peach, brown and golden shades; brown-eyed girls can choose any color, but the most successful shades will be green or blue colors such as emerald or ultramarine. When you are not too confident to wield a liner or brush at the initial stage, you can resort to improvised means. You can use ordinary masking tape, any plastic card, or a standard napkin. And the cosmetics themselves are better to go to jonteblu.com/products/jonte... if you do not want to encounter poor quality or other problems.
