Things are rapidly advancing. New anti-fibrotic drugs have been developed(and are being studied) which could possibly be used in wet AMD and other retinal conditions to prevent and reverse subretinal scarring. Gene and stem cell therapies are being studied and there are currently treatment trials going on for many retinal diseases. The zebra fish is being studied due to its remarkable ability to regenerate its damaged retina--humans have the same regenerative equipment but evolution has turned it off.

Anyways, here is a great article about a young boy who lost his vision due to a genetic retinal disease and had it restored by the use of gene therapy. Enjoy!
