Any evidence re Macushield vs icaps

I’ve been taking icaps for many years but still progressed from dry to wet AMD. Does anyone know of any studies indicating that macushield or macushield gold may be a better option? I know they’re much more expensive which doesn’t really matter much but on the other hand I have no wish to waste my money lol.

I don't know of any studies but I can say for myself that I said no to anymore injections and started on CBD oil and Macushield gold. I did find the Macushield gold was making me sick so I changed to Macushield. I have just had my 3rd examination and was told all is fine, even the Gloucoma has been kept at bay and all is well behind my eyes. I didn't even need to buy new glasses. I hope you find something that suits you. Good luck.

Yes it is the medical one it doesn't contain THC so you don't get high on it , it works for me. But like I say this is just my experience. Good luck.

If you can't get through to the hemp wellness centre try devonhemp.co.uk . I take one drop of 66% a day. But as I say it is better they advise you on how much to take as we are all different and it can upset your tum if you take too much. It's really down to what suits you. I wish you good luck.

Hi. Took Neurof total as recommended by my optician. Kept everything stable for nine years, but, alas wet AMD developed in one eye. Might it have happened sooner without supplements? Who knows?

I used to take supplements but gave up as I found they made no difference at all.

ICAPs, Macushield (all variants), MacuSave etc are all dietary supplements, not treatments. They are intended to prevent or slow the progression of macular degeneration, the will not reverse it and are not a treatment or cure. They may prevent further deterioration, but it’s pretty much impossible (outside of an intense clinical study) to tell in one individual if they are having that effect.

The problem is that I don’t know of any clinical studies that have compared the different commercially available formulations. I see the advice from the Macular Society is based on AREDS 2. The CREST study used a slightly different formula 10:10;2 carotenoids that’s 10 meso-zeaxanthin, 10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin in each daily dose, but less additional vitamins and minerals.

So you have to decide if it’s worth it *to you* to spend the money for something that may help keep your eyesight going longer. But it’s not an alternative to the injections, because it’s not a treatment. See the advice given by the Macular Society

Dear Emilinep,

I am copying a link to our Nutrition booklet:

macularsociety.org/sites/de...

This refers to the AREDS trials. Macushield Gold is one of the supplements that complies with the findings of these.

We do not recommend particular supplements, however, we do suggest that if an individual is considering taking them, that they consult with their GP in case of any conflict with any existing medication or medical conditions.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to discuss this further. The Macular Society Advice and Information service is open 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday on 0300 3030 111.

Alternately, you can contact us via:

Kind regards,
