Should I continue taking Macushield Gold?

A local optician diagnosed me with AMD at a routine eye test. Just before this test I had noticed a small amount of distortion on a chart at work and a bend in a lamp post. I was referred to an eye clinic, given an Amsler chart and chose to start taking Macushield Gold.

My first hospital appointment was cancelled but there was an improvement on the Amsler chart so I didn't worry.

Had my hospital appointment after around 3 months and to my delight I was told I don't have AMD, just a mark on my retina which was mistaken for AMD. The consultant said people can also have a small amount of distortion occasionally. The distortion I had is very small now.

I am over the moon but have a nagging thought regarding the Macushield Gold. What if that improved things a lot? I'm worried that if I stop taking it I will start having the distortion again.

I will ask GP to explain the mark on my retina (too amazed to ask the consultant!).

Would you all continue the Macushield?

Hi Rufuscat,

Glad to hear that you don't have AMD. However I think you have good reason to carry on with the Macushield. Whether they improved things or not It's a good idea to carry on with them for the the sake of good eye health. They are not cheap I know as I take them myself so if there are no cost concerns it's a no brainer!

Good luck

It's a supplement that may slow down macular degeneration.

The macular society have a leaflet with information about supplements and diet which will let you know more.

It is probably pure coincidence that my distortion improved and the consultant was sure I don't have AMD.

Yes I would continue taking Macushield it is only a vitamin tablet. Al.Gee.

If you can afford it (I wait for boots 3 for 2 offers for my hubby) continue. Wont hurt and might help stave off future problems. It's the easiest way to get the right levels of the things that are specifically good for the macular. I tried eating the right stuff but didn't like the volumes required foodwise lol.

Hi Rufuscat,

If you haven't been diagnosed with dry macular degeneration then there would be little benefit in spending money on supplements.

You can get most of the things you need from a healthy balanced diet.

For your information, please see our nutrition booklet at the following link;

I know your post quite a while ago but there is a cheaper alternative on the market. (Think Holland & Barrett) I take Macushield Gold until run out but not as many as they recommend (usually 2 a day) as too expensive and eat dark green leafy veg. Long may your eye health continue.

Thank you! I later found out that I have a PED so just in case it’s not as harmless as I was told I did restart taking the supplements x
