Hi,

There were big price increases in my usual Macushield supplements recently, so I had a look around and found Eye Complex 7 from Time Health. They seem to have all the right ingredients and are about half the price of Macushield. I just wondered if anyone had experience of these? I know its difficult to know what is actually in these things and its not possible to see any effect.

I use Macushield too and mine went up a lot when they added vitamin B2. I used to pay around £30 for a three month supply of capsules and they went up to nearly £45. But I discovered they now do a chewable version of the tablet which was £10 for a pack of 30 making a three month supply cost about the same as I used to pay for the 90 capsules.

However - I have just been on the website (not sure if I'm allowed to say the website name) to check those prices and blow me, the 90 capsules are now back down to £29 and the new chewable tablets are £7.50. So you might find it worth checking the prices again!

Ahh ok - I did think I had a good look this morning. However I have already ordered the alternative company's product. Unfortunately you cannot really tell what the effect of a certain product, you just have to hope for the best.

I gave up on all supplements as they cost a lot of money and don’t seem to make any difference.

I was £90 for three packs of macushield on boots three for two offer. Boots do An own brand which I have had for years which is half the price but it was out of stock. Like rp44 I am sceptical as to wether they do any good if you have an ok diet. Many patients could not afford them anyway. Especially in the current economic climate.

Yeah, you never know how much effect they have. At best they slow down the progression so there is no way to tell. A good, mixed healthy diet might be as good.

They aren't supposed to make a difference in the sense of making an improvement, they may help prevent further deterioration but they won't contribute to a cure, that is really true of all supplements, which is why they aren't described or sold as medical treatments.

I use MacuSave, which has the 10-10-2 formula of Lutein, Meso-zeaxanthine and Zeaxanthine but doesn't contain the other ingredients in th emore expensive ones, so I add a cheap Vitamin C + Zinc tablet. MacuSave is currently £19.99 for 90 at Savers

I have not heard of Macusave, I will look for that one next time. My question was really about how trustworthy less well know brands are, and there seems no way of knowing if they contain what is claimed.

I buy Macushield Gold off Amazon, currently £15.69 for 30 days-worth, slightly less if you have a subscription.

The lack of a licensing or even registration for supplements, nutraceuticals, is a real issue.

However MacuSave is made by Zeon, an Irish firm, who seem pretty solid, and stocked by major UK chains, so there have been no major problems it seems, it’s not like buying an anonymous product from the internet. They also claim direct links to the source of the lutein (Indian marigold growers) which indicates it’s probably traceable.

I worked in medicines development, so I’m fairly sceptical, but this looks ok to me.
