Amitriptyline ?

Anyone have any idea why my GP gave me Amitriptyline ? Not sure what they would be for? He seemed to think from my symptoms I do have Lupus,I'm having blood tests done Tuesday.

I take this for fibromyalgia. I also have lupus and have had for over 10 years but have never taken it for that. Hope that helps x

I was given this a couple of weeks ago to help ease pain which was keeping me awake at night. It also acts as a mild sedative, so bonus!!

Thanks that's helped a lot as I was a bit worried, my mum in law found reason in medical book saying for ..nocturnal enuresis and aggressive behaviour ! I think I've been px it for the pain then , thanks you guys x

It is a mild antidepressant and it is prescribed usually to help with the sleep. One of its side effects is some pain relief, which is why it is used for fibro and connective tissue diseases with joint and muscle pain.

I was given it to relax me so I could get some sleep at night, I have Lupus and Fybro and the pain is constant.

I was given it to relax my joints to enable me to sleep as the pain was keeping me awake all night Now it's the steroids that keep me awake can't win ,but I'm sure you will find they help Just give your body time to get used to them ,as you may feel groggy for the first few mornings Take care x

I also given this drug to help sleep- knocks me out after about 20 mins and also was told side effect was pain relief. Many drugs used to treat Lupus are designed for other purposes, ant-malarials, drugs for cancer, drugs for depression, drugs for nerve pain. Lupus is so complex it does not have its own drug, rather you may end up on a cocktail of drugs to treat the symptoms that you experience.

All the above ,I have taken it for many years it is a help to relax muscles.

Mouth can get dry though.

I have lupus and chronic obstrutive airways, i have been on it for over 15 years to help with pain.

I've been told by my gp & rheumy that for lupus, mctd etc we usually are prescribed Amitriptyline at much much lower doses than are given for depression. I started on 10mg daily at night for pelvic girdle & GYN pain, and increased to 20mg which seems good for me ongoing. And I'm sure it does help with deeper sleeping, but plaquenil 400mg had helped with that already, so the effect of Amitriptyline was sorta the icing on the cake. My impression is that side effects are mostly experienced at those much higher doses.....

At the moment I am on 50mgs of amitriptyline at nite, which is at last is beginning to work with the pain and sleep at night. I also have fibromyalgia, lupus and connective tissue disease + COPD.

That sounds good! I won't feel anxious if I need to increase my dose.

I'm no expert, but I think my gp said something bout major doses being 100mg per day +

I'm on 10mg and have been for 10 years for Migraine. It is a much higher dose when used as an antidepressant. I've only just been diagnosed with Lupus and it doesn't seem to do anything to ease joint pain but maybe it's too low a dose for that. Steroids not really helping with joint pain either mores the pity!

Hi I take Amitriptyline 25mg at night for nerve pain relief and have been told by my Gp it's a good relaxant for your body. To get the anti-depressant effect doses are over 100mg. It's a helpful drug for me, just have to watch the side effect of dry mouth, that can be hard. Hope it helps you.x

Thanks all your support has been a great help , I don't feel as if I'm totally loopy! Excuse the punn! It's just with the isolated nature crossed with the fog, sometimes I have wondered if I'm going mad! The support and knowledge from other sufferers is priceless x
