Holidays!!!!: Do any of you travel abroad for... - LUPUS UK
Holidays!!!!
I'm lucky that I don't suffer with the sun. I had my first flight & holiday abroad last year, I was always petrified I'd end up having another stroke or DVT if I went on a plane, plus I was worried I'd b arrested trying 2 get thru customs with all my meds lol! I needn't have worried! I went 2 the Canaries 4 a week & my God, I have never felt so well in all my life while I was over there! $ hour flight, no problem with customs (had all my GP scripts with me just in case!) & felt 'alive'.
I think we should all get a week's holiday 2 a destination of our choice on script, I think it does wonders 4 us, mentally, physically & emotionally ;0)
Going back there again this year :0)
We used to go abroad but since i was diagnosed with SCLE, we've been taking our holidays in the UK. It's just that i don't really fancy the idea of being overdressed in a warm climate.
However if you haven't got a problem with the sun, there is no reason why someone with Lupus shouldn't go abroad and have a great time.
The only thing that would bother me was the flight. It would play havoc with my joints and my ankles would swell up, but i always felt fantastic when i came back home.
I have no problem with the sun but i do not stay to long in the direct sun light.
I also use Avon Skin so soft witch i find the best mossie protection.
Go have fun.
Hi all I live for my holidays in the sun I seem to feel much better overall I'm not a sun worshipper but make sure my sun cream is applied. Warmth helps the joints and just being away from it all helps me forget I'm ill. Anyone fancy a trip I'm available!!
I loved my sun holidays but for me the sun has become enemy no 1 so I stay at home now. It's just not worth the it.
If you'r ok in the sun just make sure you use a high factor sun ream and ware a wide brimed hat and sun glasses.
Yeah been abroad loads of times. Can't do the long flights though. The flight does make my ankles swell which is a pain as I always have a problem with what shoes to wear. I normally go to Tenerife. I have been taken into hospital there & they were marvelous. The care was second to none & as a kidney transplant patient they took great care of me & my kidney. You really do have to make sure you got insurance though as it's private health care there.
I go to Turkey a couple of times a year. I can't sit or lie in the sun - brings me out in rash and I feel as if I burn within 5 mins - so I 'go native'. That means I wear linen trousers and loose tops, wide brimmed hat and factor 50. Then, because its a hot country, there is always hard shade (a canvas umbrella is no good as the rays get through) and so we walk along the prom, sitting in the shade, drinking Turkish chai and eating baklava - its fabulous. Then when the sun goes down, I put on my sleeveless clothes and enjoy sitting outside in the warmth. My ankles do swell on the flight so I wear those flight socks - not very elegant - but they do the job. You have a lovely time!
Hi, Im sun/light sensitive and have always been very ill whenever we have gone away, when I was finally diagnosed last year, we had already booked a holiday to the canaries and to be honest I was dreading it. I went a bit overboard and got factor 50 suncream and a few uva protective swim tops which look like surf t shirts. I stayed out of direct sun as much as possible and kept myself cool by either going in the pool regularly or with cooling sprays. It worked really well and for the 1st time in about 10 years I wasnt ill
Good luck
xx
My holidays are the only thing that keep me going!! I am lucky not to be sun sensitive although I have noticed I need a higher factor sunscreen. I wear not so sexy flight socks and drink plenty (water!) on the plane. I usually feel great whilst I am there but do little other than read and eat, Like Sher I worry about taking my meds but also take my prescriptions with me. I am off to Tenerife on 15th Feb for a week and can't wait...
Personally I don't get away much, but this is my personal choice for a couple of reasons, sensitivity to the sun and fear of flare in a foreign country. But recently I plucked up the courage and went to Spain for 2 weeks and I must be honest, I had a lovely time. It was out of season so not too hot and 2 weeks for me gave my body chance to get over the flight (I was exhausted and in pain for a few days after arrival), I wore long thin sleeves and sun cream and yeh - it was great!
I really think that we should grab and hold on tight to every opportunity to live life, but take the necessary precautions and use our common sense
Thank you all for your comments all very helpfull !!! X
