Hi Helen. Have to be honest and say its not the most pleasant experience i've ever had but it wasn't as bad s I thought it would be. Hou lie on your tummy, get a local then when that kicks in you get a deeper injection. then they use a needle thing to draw out the biopsy. you are asked to hold your breath and there is a kind of bang when they take the biopsy. They took three from me and it was the noise that was worst. It's more uncomfortable than anytning else. Then yhou have to lie flat on your back for four to six hours which means peeing lying down as they need to check your pee. Thats what I hated the most. Much easier for a man! Never had any ill effects apart from eing a wee bit sore the next day but it's worth it so you know if your kidnehs are ok.
I was lucky. I've got stage four nephritis which has been caught before it got too bad.Well it+ bad enough but at least not kidney failure!
Hope this helps and good luck for Friday. Let us know how it goes.
Keep smiling
Sharn x
Hi Helen, Ive had 3 kidney biopsy's and just like Sharn said you would rather not if you had a choice but it is the only way to tell whats really going on with the kidneys. Same as Sharm I have stage 4 nephritis which needed quite harsh treatment which they dont want to give you if its not necessary.
Its just a bit uncomfortable and then weeing in a bed pan for the few hours afterwards....take you Ipod and some nice music to listen to. I always take my own pillow too as the hospital ones are uncomfortable!!
i had one about 10 years ago and was quite painless. The pressure and odd feeling on my back when they were taking the sample was the worst bit (which was really nothing). U will be fine, just make sure u rest afterwards. X
Sarah, what treatment did they give you? They put me on presidone which is being reduced fortnightly (started at 60mg now down to 30mg), mycophenolate immunesppresents, blood pressure, dueretic and calcium tablets. Not sure how long they take to actually work and can't seem to get a straight answer as to if my kidneys have permanent damage or not. although do know it's the filters rather than the kidneys themselves.
