I always take my Plaquenil with a meal, breakfast and supper. Doctor said to do this and I always have, and never had problem with stomach upset. Headaches, well they have always been there - before and after Plaquenil. If you are not up to eating, then at least have a yogurt or something. Don't need meds making us feel worse than disease.

I am usually taking my Plaquenil with my breakfast. Because I am also taking Prednizolone and Aspirin, I have to protect my stomach with Omeprazole first and then I am taking the medication. I only had problem once with Plaquenil, when the doctor suggested to increase the dose from one to two pills. I did it without the Omeprazole and I almost destroyed my stomach. Take care xx

I take 2 200mg one in the morning and one in the evening it's best to take them with food although I've been on them so long now I can tolerate them on an empty stomach

I have a history of stomach ulcers and gastric reflux and have taken Lanzoprazole for years which I take as soon as I wake up because I need to have it half an hour before food. The pharmacist advised I leave an hour between taking the Lanzoprazole and the Plaquenil, which I must take with food. It can be a bit of a pain when getting ready for work, grabbing something for breakfast and trying to remember to take the Plaquenil. In the evening I invariably forget to take the second dose after dinner (I am getting so forgetful) so I take it with a glass of milk, apparently this is better than nothing. I have been on Plaquenil for about 6 months or so and I have noticed an improvement in the facial rash, even in a flare up it is nowhere near as red as it used to be. I think the cough and the breathing problems are a little easier too, don't know if this is to do with the Plaquenil but I'm grateful for any improvement.

thaks guys for all the answers. spoons to you all x

My consultant said that I didn't need to split the 400mg dose - can just take it all at once and it won't make any difference. This was good for me because it was giving me terrible flatulence during the day.... (although better on branded Plaquenil than the other brand) and at least on an evening I'm often just at home.

I have forgotten and taken it on an empty stomach later in the evening once or twice with no awful side effects.

I must say I have found it helps a lot. I have less background pain and more energy. I tried dropping it to 200mg but I felt tired and sore almost immediately. They've suggested that I can try 200 - 400 - 200 - 400 on alternate days later if I want.

I take mine an hour after taking my lansoprazole ( stomach protector) but I also split my dose I take 200mgs in the morning and 200mgs at night. The morning one I always take just after my breakfast ( when I remember lol) and the night one I usually take just as I go to bed I don't always have some snack to take it with but have usually eaten something during the late evening especially as we don't have our evening meal until late depending on what time my husband gets home from work. I haven't had any problems with taking the plaquenil apart from the odd rash which I'm never sure whether thats the Lupus or the tablets!

I gave up on taking it after 8 months as not really seeing any difference in taking it. Life style change was more important to cope with lupus.
