Hello, I have been advised to take statins as there is an increased risk that Lupus brings for cardiovascular disease. My cholesterol is 6 and QRISK is 5.5%. I’m 59, diagnosed with Lupus 5 years ago.
Do any of you lovely people have experience of taking statins?
Thank you 🙏

Hi I’ve been diagnosed with SLE for 27 years & been on statins for most of that time. (I’m also 59) I don’t ever recall any side effects & my cholesterol remains low. I guess we never know what research will find out in the future about medications so it’s wise to consider the options. Good luck whatever you decide xx
I'm 78 and had a call from my gp some time ago to say I was at 48% risk of heart problems would I take statins. Diagnosed with SLE about 20 years ago although I'd been unwell for quite some time. Turns out my gp was unfamiliar with lupus and did nothing to find out what was wrong apart from a hormone check that came back normal..
I agreed to the statins and within a very short time had liver problems. I was taken off them straight away, had 3 scans thinking I had an infection but no sign of any. The consultants agreed it was the statins so they were stopped.
My livers gradually settled down, no damage done but they did see something in there to do with lupus, I forget the exact words but I won't be taking them again and nothing else has been suggested.
I'm in the same situation as you in that statins have just been prescribed. So I can't offer any experience but will be interested in the replies. My QRisk score is 14.58% so much higher than yours probably due to the selection of conditions I have. I hope we both have no problems just benefits from the statins! 😊
