Spray tan

Hi all, I have cutaneous lupus and am avoiding sun exposure, using high factor sunscreen just to stay in the shade etc. also been on hydroxychloroquine for around 8 weeks now. My skin rashes are pretty much all over. I don't like being so pale and also my skin is quite marked as a result of all the rashes I've had (generally improving now). Does anyone have experience of spray tan with this condition? I don't think self tan products would be a good idea at all and obviously sunlamps are out.

I will ask my dermatologist when I next see her but just wondered if anyone here has any thoughts or experience.

Thanks

Hi Biscay. I’m curious why you think self tan lotion would not work? Some are remarkable now. I’ve not tried spray tan. Unlike you though, ( I stopped all sun before age 50) and now my upper 60s I like the natural look of my pale skin. Avene makes a great compact foundation that covers my rash/old bruise scars very well when I need it. MM

Dermatologists will tell you that tanned skin is ACTUALLY the beginning of skin damage caused by UV waves within sunlight OR any artificial source!👆

Unlike what adverts/media/celebrities say!👆the bronze look with wrinkly skin is not healthy at all whatever Hollywood or foreign holiday companies wish to project!🥹🙄

It may be a precursor to skin cancer!👆

Many if not most lupus sufferers are very photosensitive and sensibly cover up when outdoors otherwise it can lead to a serious lupus flare.

What’s wrong with pale skin obviously depending what you actually mean? There are thousands of shades of white, black, pink and yellow. It has been pointed out by paint/cosmetic developers that the human 👀 can differentiate >2,000,000 shades of colour 🧐

BTW many spray can tanning products contain suspect chemicals which can cause allergies, rashes, flare ups etc.

Be careful!

Hi, I know what you mean, I’m ghostly white, it seems to bother other people what colour I am strangely enough, I get comments like have you just arrived when I’ve been abroad for a few weeks. I have seen me using St Tropez fake tan, it lasts for about 4 days. It doesn’t affect my skin in any way, but it’s trial and error, you have to find one that suits your skin. I’d try it on a little bit of skin first. I usually only put it on my legs as I’m usually covered everywhere else but my legs are deathly white.

I use a light daily wash off self tan on my face. It give just a slight tan with a glow and I feel less washed out and like death as I am very very white skinned. I have had no problems at all with it. It gives my face glow for the day and washes off at night and I just feel a bit better when I go out etc.. I can't be bothered with the hassle of a complete body self tan but if you want to try it then I'm sure any salon would patch test an area for you first. If you buy a bottle yourself then just try a small area first and leave for a few days to see if you have a reaction. I always choose a sensitive skin one.

hello there, I’ve also got Sle and also hate being so pale, told to put factor 50 on and stay in the shade, so I’ve slapped on the fake sun tan and feel much better. And brighter and not feel like I should live in a cave. I’ve had no reaction and didn’t even think there would be a problem. I’d be interested if we are told, if there might be a problem. So far it’s ok for me Good luck

Thanks for your replies. I thought self tan products might not be a good idea because I think they work by causing the production of melolin which is the same as a natural tan . I developed a lot of what I thought were sunspots prior to the appearance of the lupus rash. Also my skin tone was becoming more uneven. Hope this makes some sort of sense. I will do more research and speak to the dermatologist. The good news is the lupus seems to be getting rid of the brown spots! Just takes ages for it to heal up.
