Post massage pain

Hi all, I had a full body massage yesterday for the first time in months... last night about 1045pm I got the most severe costochondritis from under my boobies to the bottom of my ribs.It honestly felt like I'd been stabbed repeatedly and beaten up.

I had to have pain killers and a hot bath, before finally falling asleep sat upright.

Has anyone else had massage cause such a negative response to them a few hours after ???

I'm sorry for your pain but I'm so glad to read your post. I had a massage this morning at 11am, lasting an hour. Since around 3pm I've been experiencing very sharp pain from my right shoulder blade though to my right breast. At one point was so painful it was actually affecting my breathing. It has eased off slightly but still experiencing right sided pain. Thinking back I was in pain after my last massage but thought I had maybe twisted myself getting out the car. I have another 2 sessions booked but will be cancelling them, it feels great at the time but definitely not afterwards 🌹

It is obviously not great for some of us sufferers! I'm still in pain today...... I am the same, I am going to cancel my next ones as well, as it is not worth the pain afterwards,as that in itself brings stress and upset.I hope you feel better soon xxx

It's so annoying as I've always enjoyed it but as you say, it's just not worth the pain and suffering afterwards. It never used to affect me, it's only this year that I seem to have developed a reaction to it. Just seems to be one thing after another recently 😞. Hope you feel better soon too xx 🌹

Hi Gingernat20 , sorry to hear about your bad experience and hope all is better. I have the same issues: I love massages but must be so careful. The worst was when I lost all feeling in my limbs during the masssage. She had to stop and fortunately the feeling slowly came back without a trip to hospital. I am currently trying gentle 30 min sessions now and again. I am nervous about them, but i am also convinced that a good massage is therapeutic. Good luck.

I find any massage that lasts too long causes pain after. I can take 30 mins Reflexology, facial or hot stone massage but I avoid anything deep tissue. Although it feels good at the time I pay for it after, it's like the feeling of doing too much exercise. I feel pain and a bit sick. We have to be more gentle with our bodies I think or they bite us back.

Hi nice to meet you

Sounds like severe trapped wind that's moved up under ribcage it can feel like costchroditis.

Try indigestion such as gavison hot liquids to release it

Hi there your muscles won't quite work like others this can be a magnesium issue even- almost fibromyalgia - but almost certainly connective tissue problem as Lupus presents in this way. I first knew something was wrong when I couldn't have a facial where they put an electrical current on skin which I had always had - I nearly jumped out of the chair and was told I could no longer have the treatment - I was devastated !

I can only have relaxation massages. I get a reaction of higher temp & pain. Relaxation massages only. ☹️

I wonder if massage has affected the connective tissue, which by the very nature of our disease would be prone to inflammation. Personally, I wouldn't let anyone near me, especially my rib area as I am in constant pain with it. I suspect that unless someone understands the disease they are likely, naturally, to treat our bodies the same as anyone else, sadly that just won't work for some of us - I have had myofacial release but that was with a physio at the hospital for my neck/ shoulders. That worked a treat, perhaps a happy alternative for yourself.

Our condition makes normal therapy very tricky. Even a healthy person gets headache or muscle aches after a strong tissue massage because the massaging action releases toxin that we carry. Drinking loads of water afterwards is very helpful. I used to get all sorts of nice therapies in the past but my condition has got so sensitive and no more.

The only thing I can do now is possibly reflexology (even this has be a gentle one) or light aromatherapy oil massage. Bowen therapy is the only exception because it is a manipulation and not a massage as such. And incredulously effective if done by an experienced Bowen therapist. Hope you find the right one because we all deserve a treat!

Sorry to hear about your experience but boy do I feel your pain! I no longer have any type or massage. After the last one... a treat while on holiday in Turkey.... (some treat) .... I left the treatment feeling great only to wake up the next morning unable to turn over in bed! Lasted for 6 weeks and only relieved when I went to see an osteopath at home. I guess we are all a bit sensitive to any type of manipulation.

Hello to everyone here experiencing what is a common thread of us with connective tissue diseases. I tried acupuncture for what ailed me before diagnosis and the second treatment put me to bed for nearly a week. Literally could not get out of bed. It stimulated the nervous system. Massage was impossible before I found a person who had knowledge of the immune system /she’s a former nurse for cardiologist who trained for physiology. Hands arms feet calves and scalp with lavender oil very gently. That’s all I can take. My husband gave me a wonderful neck massage a few weeks ago. I woke up dizzy, holding onto the world. It lasted about 4 days. I’m swimming again now and it is there that I find my strength!
