Hi All, hope u are all well. I was wondering if anyone with SLE & Photosensitivity taking Hydroxychloroquine has any advice on going on holiday foreign whilst taking this medication and protecting themselves from UV Rays (over and above the obvious Factor 50, a sunhat, covering up and staying in the shade). I had heard one time about stopping taking hydroxy when on holiday??Any advice is greatly appreciated 😀

Hiya, I have been a couple of holidays in the sun all while taking hydroxychloroquine. Just made sure to keep to precautions and I was okay :))

Hi, you can still enjoy going on holiday. I go away for a month in the summer to Turkey, just sit in shade where possible, wear your hat and sunglasses everywhere you go. I come back as white as I started with, it’s other people that are obsessed with thinking you have to have a tan to enjoy your holiday. I get asked have you just arrived when I’ve been there for 4 weeks. I sometimes wear fake tan just to give me a glow. I tend to stay out the heat of the day, I’m usually having an afternoon nap, the sun makes me very tired but it’s nice to see some sun, I’m in Scotland so don’t see that much of it. There is always a shady place every where you go. Enjoy your holiday. 🌞☀️

Hi, I am a long term taker of hydroxychloroquine and go to Portugal twice a year to visit family. I have never had any problems with my meds and the sun as long as you take sensible precautions which you have already listed. But what I will recommend is when you travel with medication you need to have it in its original boxes, not in white one's they sometimes give you from the pharmacy and I always take an old prescription collection slip incase of emergency so they can see exactly what meds you are on and the dose.

Hope this helps enjoy your holiday xx

I have been to Jamaica several times and always taken my medication, my advice is avoid been directly in the sun as the first time I did that I was so sick, so I learnt not to so the other times I was fine also use the sun cream it helps. Enjoy your holiday

Hi nice meetYou

Never stop hydrochlorquine no reason to for going on holiday it's not immune suppression drug it alters at cellular level.

Sun block wide brim hat try avoid hottest part of day wear collars sit in shade .

Water hydrate have lovely holiday stopping hydroxychlorquine would send into flare

Don't believe what people say this advice from my rheumatologist and rheumatologist nurse.

Not me not stop unless emergency medical reasons to.

Like I had septicemia couldn't eat can't take hydrochlorquine without full meal.

Or get tum pains sickness etc always with food

I’ve taken hydroxychloroquine for a number of years and went to Lanzarote last year and never stopped taking it and I was absolutely fine. Personally I would never recommend not taking the medication as this could make you worse as long as you wear factor 50 wear a hat & sunglasses and if it gets too hot then sit in the shade or go in somewhere cool. Hope this helps

I don't think stopping your meds would help, more likely to react later and have a flare. I never had any problems with hydroxy on holiday. Main issue is not to get an upset stomach as whatever you take will not be absorbed properly if you have diarrhoea. Go and enjoy!

Use all the precautions you discussed but Decathlon also do some SPF clothing - like cover up T-shirts etc - if you are very sensitive like me.
