Hello everyone , wondered if anybody could shed any light? I have had low ferritin levels for the last couple of blood tests and I'm due to speak to my GP on Wednesday next week. I am taking liquid iron as a supplement and have sle hypermobility and suffer with gastro issues... Has anyone been able to increase their ferritin levels, I'm concerned as wondering what's causing this would be really grateful of any input. Wishing you all lots of light and positivity thank you๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’›

I have found the oral sprays useful for increasing my ferritin levels as they bypass the stomach, being absorbed through the cheek.

I use the Better You ones, they do 5 mg and 10 mg, available from Holland and Barrett and various places online.

Hi There

I have a history of low ferritin levels too, sometimes my hemoglobin levels are in normal range but my ferritin levels have been really depleted.

When it was discovered, I had tests to try and work out why, nothing was revealed at the time, I am vegetarian and always have had heavy periods which didn't help though. Then I went on ( some years later) to be diagnosed with a few auto immune diseases, I gather low iron is quite common with sle. I also am now diagnosed with celiac, if they haven't tested you for that I would suggest you maybe inquire, as you said you have gasto issues. Celiac can affect absorption of some nutrients.

I struggle to absorb iron, through food or supplements, I've had iron infusions when its been bad. That is amazing as your levels go up straight away and each time I've had one it has made me realise just how incredibly tired the low levels had made me feel.

Like you have been recommended, I have started using the better you spray now.

I too have hypermobilty/eds, Its funny how all these diagnoses are linked.

Hope that's helped a bit

By the way I am vegetarian too . Was tested for celiac a few years ago but may ask them to retest me.Happy weekend ๐Ÿ’›

Hi all! I have had the same problem sunshine16 . Constantly prescribing me iron tablets due to low iron and low ferritin without helping. Finally, I was prescribed liquid iron and well it did improve somewhat but not much.

I think I'm half way there and next will be the spray as our lupi mates recommends.

Thank you so much for sharing, I was going crazy too and it seems to be related to SLE.

Good weekend to you all.โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿฆ‹

maybe you need to take folic acid daily. I've found that helps. Only not on the days I take methotrexate.

Thank you for all your replies much appreciated and happy Sunday ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’›

Hi Sunshine

Yes, both mine were low too, tablets did nothing for over a year until I took a vitamin C tablet at the same time. Not a mega dose, just a standard one. I shouldnโ€™t be low on vitamin C as I eat well, but it helps with absorption and raised my levels. โœจ

Thank you so much for your reply. The very strange thing is my hemoglobin level is normal is just my ferritin has gone down. But I will try taking a vitamin c with the better you and hope ๐Ÿ™
