Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with lupus 3 years ago and I had back pains (sciatica, so back pains is not new) before my diagnosis with lupus. But recently, I have upper and mid back pains especially when I bend forward 30 degrees. Does anyone suffer upper and mid back pains and does it relate to lupus? I would appreciate some advice.

Hello Sunflowers. I have back pain and have had back surgeries. At 65 a lot of the discomfort is arthritis. The only person qualified to answer you is your doctor. I’ve not heard of lupus causing back pain but it is a sneaky disease so please get it checked so you will know the facts and ditch the worry. MrsMarigold

Hi MrsMarigold, thank you for your reply. Yes, I will try and make an appointment with my Rheumatologist, but I just want to check if Lupus can cause back pains.

I would check it out to be safe. Mid back pain can be linked to liver or kidneys so worth a check for piece of mind.

Post two surgeries I do get mid back pain as that part carries my lower back which is weaker. You know your body and the different pains so if unsure check it out.

Hi Hampton, thank you for your reply. I didn’t know mid back pains could be linked to kidney and liver. I will definitely get it checked with my doctor.

Hi sunflower, I’ve been suffering quite a bit with pain in neck, upper and lower back. I’ve had MRI which showed some of the vertebrae’s slightly bulging, so I was sent to musculoskeletal who then decided there’s no fluid which is making the bones rub together. I dont want surgery if I can help it so have self referred to physio where I’ve been shown exercises that hopefully will help. Physio said the pain was a combination of muscle and joints hurting. It’s only been a few weeks so too soon to say if it’s going to help. (I also have neuropathy goi g on) I have lupus sle and sjogrens. I personally think sojgrens causes me more problems than lupus but who knows ? 🤷‍♀️

Having said that, it’s still best to mention it to GP/consultant so that they can check what is causing the pain as there are numerous reasons which can be causing it. 🙂

Hi Chris21, thank you for your reply. So sorry to hear you are suffering from pains in your neck, upper and lower back. I hope your physio therapy will help you ease the pains. Did they say what caused the vertebrae bulging?
