Hi everyone, I need some advice please 🙏I'm currently in a flare and have sle which has caused kidney damage and was advised not to take naproxen is there an alternative to take to reduce the pain? I'm on hydroxy and have managed very well and not had a flare like this since being diagnosed but currently can't lift my arms due to the pain in my shoulders. I've tried the dr's and told to go to pharmacy which is my plan today but just wondering if anyone has any advice before I pull my together to get to the chemist thank you

Celecoxib is the only non opioid pain drug that is safe to take (for avoiding kidney damage and GI bleeds) as far as I know. Every once in a while I take two naproxen even though I am not supposed to, it works . My Rheumatologist started me on Sulfasalazine, it actually seems to help the daily pain a lot. Until the flare that began this morning…

Thank you Luzy, let's see if the chemist will give it to me 🤞. I took naproxen last night just to help sleep

Hi Zeberdee1

I hope that the pharmacist was able to help; they are often a great resource for medication questions, especially when it can be difficult to get an appointment with your GP.

In case it’s helpful and you haven’t seen it, we have a blog post on pain management in lupus. It doesn’t specifically talk about which medications to take, as that can be different for everyone and depends on the other medications they take or other medical conditions they have, but it has some tips on different ways to manage pain: lupusuk.org.uk/pain-managem...

Take care

I would not recommend anything without consultant approval but I have had one kidney removed and damage in the other and was ok'd for paracetamol and codeine by my urologist and rheumatologist. I only take one codeine tablet a day though when the pain is tough to deal with anywhere. I wait till evening when I can't stand it any more and then just chill once I've taken it. Solpedeine Max (red tablet) is non prescribed over the counter and the same dose as prescribed codiene it's just all combined with paracetamol. Nytol is good for sleep but only for a few days. If you can't get pain relief its hard to function and that spirals into not sleeping and a never ending circle of pain and no sleep. Stay away from ibuprofen based meds its a no no with kidney issues. Although I have broken the rule once or twice for muscle pain like you. I hope you get pain relief as its just horrible when nothing works on it and you can't sleep.
