Exposure to chickenpox. GP refuses to consider antivirals

I've just found out that I've been exposed to a child with chickenpox. When I was prescribed methotrexate l, they made it clear that any exposure should be immediately reported to the GP so that antivirals should be administered. However, the GP flatly refuses.

I have consulted my medication notes and they clearly state that I should call the GP.

Unfortunately, the rheumatology line is closed in Fridays and NHS 111 has an hour long wait.

I have a rheumatologist appointment on Monday, should I just wait for this?

Many thanks, Sarah

It isn't now that you need to panic - the antivirals cannot be used prophylactically, they only are effective once the symptoms start to appear which is likely to be 10+ days after exposure. You are fine waiting until Monday.

It would be helpful to know what stage of CP the child was at when you were exposed and when it was. Did you have CP yourself as a child? In the vast majority of cases the immunity you built up then will persist and the fact you are on immunosuppressants won't alter that, it would possibly prevent you developing immunity now, different thing.

If i remember correctly, MrsNails on the PMRGCAuk forum has experienced exactly the same problem, I believe she was checked for CP antibodies and she was fine. Tell her I "sent you" and ask her - I'll warn her you may contact her

Thank you so much! MrsN and I have communicated. I'll ask at the rheumy appointment on Monday.

It was on the leaflet I was given when I had steroid injection and also on leaflet for methotrexate.

Update I was given by rheumy is that you only need to contact the GP if you show symptoms. Not on exposure.x
