Cancer undiagnosed thanks to GP

Some of you may remember my posts about having kidney problems that my GP and rheumatologist states were nothing to do with Lupus and despite emergency visits to hospital.

I spoke about my GP denying me further

treatment, even last year when my urine test was so toxic an old GP rang me to say I may have Sepsis and arranged anti biotic following both my GP and rheumatologist refusing me anything without a test.

Well, I paid a heavy price for their negligence.

I have stage 3 cancer in my kidney, so large it engulfed my kidney and the kidney had to be removed.

It had been there 2 to 3 years at least, surgeon could not believe I had never seen a specialist.

Said GP now ignores me and rheumatologist apparently off in leave so I had to see someone else.

I’m furious and still very ill.

This is very distressing. I am very sorry you had to endure this -- cancer is dreadful, and knowing it could have been caught earlier must be so painful and dismaying. And infuriating. I hope they will assign you to another GP. Please know that we are thinking of you here.

So sorry to hear this, I hope you’re on the road to recovery soon. Can completely understand why you’re furious, when you kept raising problems and being ignored ☹️ Definitely need a new GP and rheumy that you can learn to trust to care for you in addition to your cancer care. Do you have good cancer drs? Lots of love x

I'm so sorry to read this, this is a terrible experience for you. I hope you find better Dr's who are competent to help you.

I know it is probably the last thing you feel able to do, but please consider either you or your family putting in a formal complaint about the GP. That is abysmal care, and hopefully may prevent others having the same issue. A quick Google shows how to complain and who to contact.

I was going to suggest a complaint being put forward as well. If nothing else to at least save someone else going through the same thing. Take care in your recovery x

It makes you angry🤬 wishing you a speedy recovery. X

Dear Iona, incredibly sorry to read about what you have been through.....and are still going through. Please accept my profound sympathy and my special thoughts and very best wishes for your recovery and remission. I hope that you have been offered support and guidance now, by Macmillan for example, after such an intensely difficult time. With my very best regards, Lily

So sorry to hear that - hope it goes well from now on.

I echo Wirlass - official complaint time. Even a chat with a claims solicitor. Sheer stupidity of that sort needs stamping out.

I’m very sorry to hear that. You know your own body and instinctively knew something was wrong and the physicians weren’t listening which happens all too often. I pray that you will get care now that will heal this problem completely. Hugs, Nan

How awful, I'm so sorry to hear all this. Wishing you well in your recovery 💐x

Hi Iona467,

Very sorry to hear about your dreadful experiences from these supposed doctors.

Why should these so called health professionals get away with their negligence?

I would seek guidance and advice from specialist MEDICAL AND CLINICAL NEGLIGENCE legal professionals ASAP.

Absolutely not good enough treatment.

Justice must be served.

Your GP is especially negligent for not examining you properly and referring you to the appropriate specialist😰😢. In my opinion there are a lot of well below standard GPs.

This must be reported to the authorities as your surgeon suggests.

Regards

I'm sorry this happened to you...

Sometimes when you have a serious chronic disease a doctor will attribute all of your symptoms to it and not delve deeper unless you press them for it.

Lupus in particular has so many different symptoms that it is easy to ascribe just about any ailment you have to it.

The only defense there is to really know your body and to keep pressing the doctor for more tests if you believe it is not lupus related.

I went thru a stage where I became so ridiculously tired I could barely function. I eventually realized it was not normal, even for lupus, and had some other odd symptoms, so I got online and did research and realized that it might be low thyroid, especially since my mother had this problem when she got older.

I went to the GP and insisted that I get tested for it, and the doctor initially pooh-poohed the idea saying it was my lupus making me tired, but I insisted they do a blood test for it. They called me back in a panic because my thyroid was so low it was dangerous (one can actually eventually die from it because the thyroid controls many body functions).

It is common to have thyroid issues with lupus as the thyroid can be destroyed by lupus, but everyone was just saying 'it's the lupus tiredness' and didn't dig deeper to check for secondary problems.

So you have to be a strong advocate for your own health. If I have any suspicion that a particular doctor isn't doing what they should, I go for second opinions etc. It sounds like your GP was not the best doctor.

I agree you might want to contact a solicitor, but right now please focus on your health and getting better. Try to de-stress as much as possible and take care of yourself. I've known people with kidney cancer and they have gone on to be fine after treatment, so please look for a cancer support group to help you get thru this and advocate for you.

I am sorry that you were left so rejected by the people we trust most. I really hope you recover soon and will have you in my thoughts. I was ignored by a consultant in March 2019. I told him that I felt quite ill and was on my last 2days of a 2 week antibiotic and steroids. He tol,d me that I looked really well to him and told me he didn't need to see me anymore. I felt so small and belittled I said nothing and lef.t his office. 3 weeks later I was to hospital by emergency ambulance and blue lights. I also have COPD and couldn't inhale at all. It was terrible ordeal. Nothing like what you had to endure because of not been listened to and treated as if you know nothing about your own body. If we think that there's something wrong that's when we go get advice and treatment. So so sorry about the aufwll ordeal you went through. I will keep it in mind the next time a dr doesn't listen to me. Take care.Suzanne

The consultants make me feel small and belittled too. I get so ill I can hardly look after myself so now always have a member of the family with me for support. It is such a fight.

It makes me so mad to think about one of the GPS laughing at me, insisting I stopped taking any water for 12 hours a night even though I am diabetic. It was cancer that made me go to the loo all night, not the glass of water I took at night!
