Can you take Prednisone and MethylPREDNISolone together?

I just went to Express Care for swelling, inflammation and PAIN in my foot and a massive bruise on my leg. IAS far as I know, I did not bump, fall, etc. so there is no reason for what happened for certain. I already take Prednisone. The doctor in Expreess Care prescribed the MethylPred for the pain, inflammation and swelling. Just want to know if anyone else has taken both together.

Thank you and healing hugs.

Seems a bit pointless to me - why not just increase the pred dose? Also not really convinced that it is appropriate for pain control but hey-ho ...

Thanks. I wondered that as well. I did read where it can boost in the lowering of inflammation and swelling when already taking prednisone. I guess I will give it a try.

Thanks again. Healing hugs.

My understanding is prednisone is absorbed through liver/kidneys is rough on Stomach. Methylprednisolone is absorbed

Differently. Sorry can not remember but it is considered “safer.” Taking both at same time seems off. Not sure I would do it without my GP.

Hi Titters, Thanks for your thoughts. I found that it is used with prednisone to give it a boost.

Prednisone is processed in the liver to produce prednisolone which is the active form - it isn;t hard on the liver but anyone with dodgy liver function will benefit from not being on prednisone but rather the other forms. One downside of methyl pred - and one I can attest to - is it is more likely to cause achilles tendonitis than pred though it does it too - and mixing it with quinolone antibiotics, even a history of taking them, increases that risk.

However - I had severe adverse effects when on methyl pred (normally used here, prednisolone not available), becoming Cushingoid which I am not on pred, massive weight gain, a black beard and severe muscle wasting within a few months, All reversed when I stopped it and switched to prednisone.

Were you on it very long. This is for 6 days with a tapering schedule. I haven't had any problems with regular prednisone and would hate to have more problems added to the mix.

Some months - a 6 day taper is absolutely no problem from any aspect.

Thanks, Betty. This is pill form, but I think it is for the same purpose. Read where it can be an added boost when given with prednisone.

Good to know

Yes - I can see the point of the injections being added to oral pred.
