The following information has been provided from The University of Liverpool, who will be carrying out the study:
About the study:
We are exploring cognitive biases that we believe affect those who catastrophise about pain and/or have developed chronic pain. These biases can influence the persistence of pain, severity of pain and the level of physical dysfunction pain causes. If we can identify these biases, it will support the integration of interventions that remove these biases into cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) programmes. We hope that in doing this, we will improve the effectiveness of CBT at reducing pain in those with chronic pain.
Who can take part?
Individuals who have chronic pain OR are pain-free and are aged over 18 years.
What will you be asked to do?
You will be asked to complete online questionnaires about your mental health, sleep patterns, experience of pain (if you have chronic pain), and how anxious you are about painful experiences. You will also be asked to perform a task that involves presenting you with descriptions of negative life scenarios that are known to affect some people, and asking for you to report your belief in how likely it is you would be affected by those situations in the future. We estimate this study will take 30 – 50 minutes to complete.
You will be given a £5 Amazon voucher as a thank you for your time.
