Gastritis

Has anyone found that since having Lupus that they now have stomach problems. I first developed gastritis a few years ago when my GP gave me statins. Normally eat reasonably healthily but 2 weeks ago I shared the most delicious fish & chips with friends and have suffered badly ever since.

Yes - I have gastritis and take Lansoprazole to help alleviate the symptoms. Maybe check it out with your GP as there is treatment for it.

I did speak to the GP and she gave me omeprazole and a zillion tubs of gaviscon but they are only keep it at bay I know it is there and I am becoming frightened of eating, think I need to go back to her.

Yes good idea, I find that eating smaller portions, little and often helps. Soothing herbal teas like mint are good and if you don’t mind the flavour, ginger is good too. Avoiding inflammatory foods like tomatoes, potato skins, aubergine and peppers help the tum too.

Hi,

Can I ask if your omeprazole started to work for your gastritis? I'm on day 8 and not feeling great still doctor says I need to keep on for 3 more weeks x

Finally this week I started to feel the benefit of them, I started taking them on the 13 October. As I have had this in the past due to statins, I now feel that the plain simple truth is that diet has to be the key to this as this last bout was caused by the scrumptious fish & chips that I ate. Hope you start to feel better soon

Hi Horsewhisper. Can I just ask if you are on Hydroxychloroquine and if so which brand? I suffered terribly with gastritis and 2 endoscopies 2 years apart found no real reason for the inflammation. My GP tried me on Lansoprazole and then Omeprazole along with liquid Gaviscon and although they helped they didn’t cure it. After reading a post on here I changed my brand from Bristol to Zentiva and what a difference! 6 months or so down the line I’m off all stomach preparations and can pretty well eat what I like thanks to the Zentiva brand of Hydroxychloroquine. My pharmacist has put on my notes that I can only tolerate Zentiva brand (which I think is more expensive) so that is now what I always get thank goodness. Just thought I’d let you know in case you have the same cause. Take care. 🤗😘x

Oh good spot, Spotty! I seem to get whatever they have in the surgery dispensary- this month it is Zentiva! Yes perhaps the gastritis was caused by the hydroxy - as I had been on that for a year before symptoms arose and the first endoscopy. I am on PPI’s to protect my tum from the steroids as well, so I’m not sure if I could tell the difference at the mo. I think once I’m on a lower dose of steroids and don’t need the PPI’s, I could see how my tum reacts with the different brands? Thanks for the suggestion, it’s really helpful! Hope you’re ok - is it wet and windy where you are today? Chucking it down where we are! 💨 🌧🤗😘🤗

Glad the suggestion is helpful. 👍🏻 It has been wet and windy here since Friday and forecast for the same most of the week.🤦‍♀️ Ideal weather while we are resting and going through heaps of old photos sorting them, trying to remember when and where they were taken and with whom, and then getting them into albums that have been gathering dust for years. Then they’l go back onto shelves to gather dust once again. 😂 Thank goodness for more recent digital photos that tell you when and where they were taken. Wish they could tell you who are in the photos too. Gets the little grey cells working.😉

Hoping you are enjoying your day.🤞🙏🏻 Take care. 🤗😘

Yes wet and windy here too - all week! A good excuse to stay in and get indoor jobs done - as well as a bracing walk in the wind with the leaves swirling! I’ve been meaning to sort out photos for ages - think I’ll give that a go next week, nice indoor job for sure. I get what you mean about remembering peoples names - particularly people from work over the years who we now linger see - oh well, good mental exercise as you say! 🍂 🍁 🍃🤗😘🤗

We’ve enjoyed going through the photos - very nostalgic and loved those of abroad where hubby was stationed on a ship for several years and I was able to get out to see him if the ship was not working. Lovely memories and just like a revisit. I hope you enjoy going through yours too. Also a lovely feeling when the wastebasket fills up with copies or rejects. 👍🏻👍🏻😂😂 Enjoy. 🤗😘x

Yes the evoking of memories - a single pic can take you right back to a moment in time! I want to put together an album for my daughter’s 18th - with an old fashioned feel to it - put photos in of her growing up and write underneath in pen who she was with, where, when etc. I think she will quite like that and I think I will quite like doing it too! 📸 🌟🤗😘🤗

Sounds perfect and she’ll love it all the more because you made it for her. Something she’ll no doubt treasure and look at from time to time especially the older she gets.😍 A lovely idea! 👍🏻 🥰 🤗😘

Thanks Spotty - yes that’s what I thought, something she could look back on. When everything is all digitised, flicking through pics on an iPad or phone just doesn’t seem the same as pouring over a physical book does it? Off to collect pebbles at the beach tomorrow - I’ll see what I can create to post on here soon! 🌊💨🌧👍🤗😘🤗

You can’t beat a physical book I agree.

Have fun collecting pebbles! Looking forward to seeing what you create. I bought some paint pens too but haven’t tried them yet. So many other things to do at the mo but I’ll get round to it. Hope your weather is kind tomorrow. 🤞🤞 🤗😘x

Hi

Yes. I have developed sensitivities to food over time. I have had to cut out dairy and gluten and I do feel an improvement. I do feel there is a link as my daughter is coeliac, which is autoimmune.

I was prescribed cellcept. That drug was harsh for my stomach. I experienced perforated colon. After that episode I developed gastritis. I believe leaky gut is an issue I need to deal with. I recently found a company will prescribe my probiotics based on my stool sample. Diet & Anxiety also plays a role in my gut health.

Probiotics - never though about those, the first time I had not been diagnosed with lupus and it was put down to stations and I flatly refused to take them. Thus time I can pin it down to fish & chips which in itself is strange as I have been following a low carb diet which has a high fat content. Thank you for your input

Yes I was diagnosed in may this year with lupus sle and always felt I had something stuck in my esophagus but after a hospitalization and insisting on an endoscope they found I have gastritis, polips in my esophagus which were benign plus folds in my esophagus too. Anyway I’m on nexium 40mg x 4 a day plus 1mg cidine for 2 months. My rheumatologist tells me this is Not a lupus symptom but I’ve read so many lupus patients suffer with GI problems. Fish and chips killed nearly too I’ve not eaten them since

thank you, I can firmly blame the fish & chips this time as it was almost instantaneous. I have to see the Rheumy in about 3 months so hopefully will be able to hold off until then for anything over and above what the GP has given me

Yes, developed after about 6 years. I had crippling bouts of gastritis, now less severe with omeprazole. I also take CBD oil daily which has lessened symptoms.

I have a range of gastric issues from IBS to acid reflux, to Dysphagia. I have been on antibiotics and my gut is just awful. I am spending lots of time in the loo and really bad sweats. Currently eating cooked food makes it worse and I have no idea why. I am on Omeprazole at night which helps but it is an ongoing problem. I hope your GP can help you . It is really miserable xx

For me, stomach and gut issues were the the first sign that something wasn't right. I was eventually diagnosed with Coeliac disease, then SLE 6 months later. (Initially incorrectly diagnosed with IBS, but that's a different story). Even with my Coeliac disease under control, I was experiencing low appetite and nausea every day, and woke up with a terrible gurgling stomach every morning. Eventually I was prescribed omeprazole, which helped quite a bit. I still take it now, as I am also on steroids and MMF, which can also irritate the stomach.

Are you on Hydroxychloroquine ? I suffered really badly with gastritis after being on Hydroxychloroquine for a year or two and had 2 endoscopies to see what was causing it - nothing evident. I changed the brand of my Hydroxychloroquine and haven’t looked back.

I am on hydroxy, after the last time I had gastritis I have been eating a low carb diet as it seemed to suit my diet, I think this time I can firmly blame the fish & chips I had, but goodness me although I have been good food wise it is taking its time to go away

I changed from Bristol brand to Zentiva and it has made a world of difference. I no longer need the Gaviscon, omeprazol or Lanzoprazole (tried both) And can eat pretty well what I like. My pharmacist has now put on my records that I ONLY tolerate the Zentiva brand so that is what I get. Good luck.
