Whether you are aware of it or not some foods are very addictive
The foods you eat most regularly determine what's contained in your gut bacteria. Simply because the gut bacteria is there to help digest your food and won't thrive unless you feed it what it wants. So if you have been eating stuff that serves bad bacteria you are going to get nasty reactions from the overgrowth of bad bacteria that's being starved. Until you begin to get things under control again.
Sugar and sweet things are a major culprit here but processed food - anything in a packet or box or tin or that doesn't look immediately like a raw form of food - is likely not going to do you any favours and also possibly has the addition of flavouring enhancers which are addictive to get you to buy again.
The prednisolone will dampen your symptoms but will not fix the problems without you taking extra steps.
And it's incredibly likely that at 40mg you will gain weight quickly especially if you have a high intake of carbs
If you cut the carbs in your diet it usually helps relieve the hunger pangs as well as moderating weight problems.
Pred changes the way your body processes carbs as well as triggering the liver to release random spikes of glucose into the blood - which triggers insulin release which tends to be too much as there isn't a meal to back up that spike. The BS level then overshoots and falls too far, causing the hunger for carbs to bring the BS level back up - and a real rollercoaster effect gets going.
The first week or so is hardest but once you get into it you do notice the cravings improving. If you are interested there are loads of posts over on the PMRGCAuk forum because low card is the way we push as everyone is on long term pred (years, not months) so it is a major problem for us. It is easy to adjust to daily living, even eating out - steak no chips and salad is on every pub menu! Low carb means you don't have to stress about finding low fat things - usually full of sugar so really a no-no! Cheese, eggs, meat and fish are all no/low carb and make ideal light meals and snacks.
I have just myself been out on 40mg pred. In the last month and a half. I have noticed mainly since the end of last week to yesterday that it has opened my appetite up as I had lost 3 pounds in the last few months as when the pred was on a low dose my other meds were surpressing my appetite. I have been eating sometimes one main meal a day, but I ate at least 3 times Saturday, plus 4 packs of crisps! Which I haven't eaten that much in months and months. Lol.
I would love to hear also what can help, as I just go straight to eating without even thinking about it, and alot! X
I been going to raw carrots the hard crunch n sweetness helps my mouth stay busy, stuck up on veg n fruits. Drink tea, oatmeal, cream of wheat, water, i ate good yesterday n feel less puffy 2day
Will definitely try some more fruits. Just ate and my stomach mid absolutely killing me. Lower stomach cramp, especially if I cough! Lol. I may try yoghurts again as that usually fills me up quite well.
Well, I have just found out the ONLY thing that I can eat without it reacting to my stomach is noodles. Lol. Every single thing I have eaten from last week made me bloated, gassy, made my indigestion worse. Tried noodles last night after taking my indigestion meds and it seemed to work better than anything else. So it seems like I am on a diet of noodles for the time being. 🥴
Hi,was on a high dose for a month, feel for you having todo 3 months.
But,it’s probably better than being so ill.
apart from the obvious,- take it as early as early in the day as possible. I used to get up at 6 and take the pred with a brew, then back t bed.try and eat healthy, exercise etc.
I kept a fleece blanketontesettee for when I couldn’t sleep,ifI did get up I kept off theiPad..
I used to watch boring television, you didn’t say whether you are working or not.thinkingof you
Yea my hubby works nights so i go do any errands in morning & get dinner in afternoon & wen he gets home. Find it really hard to get naps in day, my most jittery time . I will & thank u hun
Hi Prince. I’d chew gum when I got the urge to eat in between meals. Popcorn was a good snack too. I found rowing or a recumbent bike to give me a decent exercise for my body without winding me. Maybe try one of those under the table, portable bikes. I know people who’d use these at work under their desks.
I was on steroids for about 6 months. I gained 25 lbs and am still trying to lose it. Steroids also made me very short of breath. I really feel for you. I hope they work to resolve your lung issues so you regain some semblance of quality of life. ❤️ Hang in there!
Thank u , its unresolvable unfortunately they say it just deteriorates but with kuck we can control the lu pool us itself which hopefully can slow progression, ill try the gum thank u so much
I was told by my lupus Dr to cut out all refined sugar whilst I was on steroids. After getting over the shock I did it, felt great and no weight gain. I'm a chocoholic so just ate Raw chocolate. It was a good education.
