Hi Zagreb, though the butterfly rash is a tell tail sign of Lupus, not everyone gets it. There is a list of about 11 general symptoms (someone correct me if I’m wrong) and you only need a handful of them before the doctors want to start testing your blood for markers.

I hope that helps.

And no, it is not restricted to lupus, there are other causes

is, I think, a good clear summary article which is easy for non-medical people to read.

This is a great reference. I can't recall right now where I came across/heard this, but some drugs can also cause a malar-esque rash.

Hi Zagreb1987,

According to The Lupus Encylopedia, up to 60 % of lupus patients will develop a malar (butterfly) rash at some point in their lifetime.

Lupus presently differently in everybody, therefore, no two people will share the exact same experience, i.e. one person may experience a malar rash whilst another person may not.

According to The Lupus Encyclopedia, other possibilities that sometimes resemble a butterfly rash can include acne rosacea (adult-onset acne), seborrheic dermatitis (which is a type of scaly skin inflammation), and even the use of steroids (which can cause a red face). Sun exposure can also cause a person to experience skin involvement - this is why it advised for people with lupus to wear sunscreen throughout the year including winter months where UV light is still penetrated from the sun.
