My eyes are deteriorating, and I think hydroQ is the culprit. Been taking since January, increased to 400mg appropriate 3 weeks ago. Eyes have been getting Redder and redder and today extremely dry and sore.
Please can you help recommend an eye treatment that isn’t drops as I just can’t get them right. I’m at the hospital again next Wednesday, so I’ve decided to stop the hydroQ until then . Thank you x

I use Carbomer eye gel 0.2%, it’s really soothing and helps with the dry eyes. It is a little gloopy so it makes your vision a little blurry for a few minutes but soon clears.
I don’t know if you suffer from hay fever at all but the pollen is unusually high for this time of year - could that be making your eyes worse? Mine are redder, puffier and itchier than normal so I’m putting it down to the pollen.
Could you try something from your GP for your eyes before coming off the hydroxychloroquine? Do you think it’s beginning to make a difference to you? I’d personally be careful about stopping it without advice from your Dr.
I don’t normally get sore eyes at all. It does seem to be out of the blue . To be honest I’m not feeling any better taking this medication. I had a little blister come up on my eye lid last night, I can only pin point it to the meds.
I don’t normally suffer from hay fever, but I’m aware that we can all of a sudden pick up new ailments along the way x
In the past, we have had a lupus patient recommend Thealoz Duo gel for relief of dry eyes. The gel is preservative-free. According to the gel's information leaflet, many people prefer using the gel at night before sleeping but it can be applied throughout the day.
We published a blog article on coping with dry eyes and mouth, the article contains some general tips for preventing dry eyes which you may find helpful - lupusuk.org.uk/dry-eyes-and...
I bet your meibomian glands are clogged. My eyes get sooooo red and irritated when mine are blocked. It’s called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. Here’s a link to info about it:
I use it in the morning and at night and my eyes feel so much better!
As far as administering drops yourself, the easiest method is to place the middle finger of your non-dominant hand below your eye and pull down gently which will open up your lower eyelid a bit. You then place the drop into the gap. Close eye then blink a few times. Repeat on the other eye.
I also use a product called HypoChlor to clean my upper and lower eyelids.
I spray (4-5 sprays) onto a beauty cotton round pad then thoroughly cleanse my eyelids and eye area. I generally do this in the morning before applying drops but will use it any time I feel my eyes need cleansing.
There's always the old fashioned standby in an emergency. Slices of cucumber from the fridge over the eyes. Cold and moisturizing. Or failing that a cold wet flannel over the eyes. Only thing both of these methods require you to be laying down to use effectively.
I find that indoor heating in the bedroom especially, seems to give me dry eyes. I regularly wake with a headache and it's only recently that I have begun to see a potential pattern.
