I personally would be worried about the effect that a lip filler would have on my lips could send your immune system haywire! I would use a hyluronic acid lip balm topically to plump mine if I wanted to I think maybe worth a try?

Hi poodlegal,

i’ve never had lip filler. It feels wonderful knowing that someone out there with Lupus feels well enough to think about lip fillers. i really hope you can have it done.

My lazer dermatologist has recommended Botox and fillers for various imperfections. I resist even though she says they are safe. I don’t want to find out in a few years that they activate the immune system. Certain technologies for the skin seem to be fine. I love Infini. Others are not because of photosensitivity. Make sure you go to a board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon. These procedures are not well-regulated.

Discuss this very seriously with the clinicians treating your Lupus.

Have you seen the recent publicity ensuring a law is brought in (in UK) ensuring anybody injecting anything into a human being must be medically qualified? At the moment anybody can do this.

The young lady leading the movement was injected by an unqualified practitioner who apparently....having no in depth knowledge of anatomy in the oral area - hit an artery & the outcome was to say the least disastrous.

Thankfully after treatment by qualified medical practitioners her lips were "repaired".

As I say please do a lot of research.....having Lupus is not a disease to be treated lightly & injecting a substance for cosmetic purposes does seem to be taking an unecessary risk.

Sorry to be so unhelpful....but it's my considered belief, unless your doctors can 100% assure you it's safe.......it might be best not to go ahead.

You are totally correct and helpful. The board certified doctors in the U.S. also have concerns about who is allowed to do these procedures.

Before doing anything invasive, please speak to your Lupus doctors and get their advice as this could play havoc with your immune system. Hope everything goes wellx

While I have not had lip fillers specifically, I have had fillers for areas around my mouth and even around my cheeks and eyes, I've used botox many times. Even my son, who is 25, had botox to soften very stern looking scowl lines on his forehead. He also has lupus and sjorgren's, which I have as well. I will admit though, that my disease is well managed with no significant flare-ups. In fact, last June my doctor took me completely off of plaquenil due to it being on a list of meds to avoid, in terms of a more serious heart issue I have. Since June, I have felt great, no flare-ups. I do try to compensate for the lack of meds: I eat pure food, take tumeric, garlic, apple cider vinegar, pro bionics, no milk or sugar!, I use high quality collagen building protien powder, I eat lots of fresh produce, get all the B vitamins, and even get a B-12 injection when I'm near my eye specialist' office.....and many other health inducing supplements. I would caution you to make sure you get clearance from your lupus doctors though. The first time I did Botox I was terrified, I drove home waiting for some horrible reaction to occur....but it never did. Later when I tried fillers, I had the same fear. I did the smallest amounts possible to test the waters...Now I get fillers and botox every year. I've had lupus for over 20 years and sjorgrens for a good 15 years. God bless you as you make these decisions. Pray....that's my very best advice, pray about everything. And use medical science, common sense, and give your body every natural opportunity to heal itself. It may seem vain to seek out fillers but the depression I felt over my sagging face wasn't healthy either.

No, and I wouldn't risk it. I value my health too much with suffering with this awful immune system problem - lip beauty is the least of my worries!!!!

If u decide to try it bi would suggest doing a tiny bit first and note if there are reactions. Investigate what they are made of. For example botox is just a toxin no proteins in it so there is only possibility of a rare allergy. Also how long does it take before you need to refill?

Hi poodlegal,

Have you discussed this with your rheumatologist or GP? Your doctor can advise you correctly on whether or not it would be safe for you to have lip fillers.

Not what you're looking for?
