UGGGGHHH!!!! Insomnia!!! Help!!!

My doc put me on Prednisone 10mg once daily to bring down my inflammation. Totally forgot how much I hate being on this drug. It keeps me up all night long. Any ideas what I can take that will help me sleep at night?

Exhausted going back to work first day after Christmas break!!!!

Thanks!

Hi LucyK, I feel your pain! Chronic sleep deprivation is now a bigger problem for me than my auto-immune disorder, and I do not say this lightly.

As well as following the usual 'sleep hygiene' advice, I have been prescribed zopiclone, and also tried OTC antihistamines like Nytol. Nothing has worked. Someone has bought me valerian tablets today, so I will let you know if they are a miracle cure (and if they are, I shall be sending the company my life savings in gratitude)

Hope you get some more helpful answers from others!

Mx

Hi whisperit ,

Have you discussed the valerian with your doctor? Please take care because it can potentially interact with some other treatments.

Have to agree here, valerian has several contraindications; there's quite a few good sites on google to help you get a bit more informed on what counters which medication but ask a GP as well. They're not all dismissive about alternative medicine and they may be willing to help you find a solution

It's a tough one but one of the older drowsy making antihistamines and some pain killers help me. I also take night kalms but on their own they are no match for the brain whirring from steroids. Good luck.

I use sleep-phones (yes, these are a thing). They're headphones which are in a headband and set. Is Bluetooth to my phone. I can play relaxing music that helps me sleep, meditation tracks, my own playlist, and I don't wake the Dutchman doing it either. I LOVE them. For me it's just the thing. I'd suggest the wireless ones if you can find them so you don't get tangled up. Failing that assembling a playlist of music or even an audiobook to sleep to that can play quietly at bedside might be something to try. I tend to sleep better to anything without words in, but some people are exact opposite. Experiment a bit.

Thank you so much for the great suggestions. I'm wide awake again. I did see online a device you plug in and it plays soothing sounds. Insomnia or not I am going to give it a try! Again thanks for the idea! Hope you are well!

if you have a tablet or smart-phone, you can make a quick playlist from youtube, soundcloud, or audible without having to buy a separate device just to test and see how it works. I have a youtube music playlist I use when pain is especially bad, it's made up of chants and meditation music. Might save you a few bob.

Hope you sleep well eventually!
